Digging in a fence skirt seems dumb!

So, if you do like I did. I have my lowest strand of hotwire extended out just a little from the base of my fence. A good hit of electric is enough to keep them from even thinking of digging! If anyone has done this and had a predator dig under. Let's here it! Installing the electric fence is much less labor intensive. Mine was up and running within an hour, start to finish, hardly broke a sweat! LOL

We haven't started our run yet and I never considered putting hardware cloth folded and extending on top, or slightly beneath the lawn. Makes sense.
Wonder if I can convince the hubby. Love BYC, so many great ideas!

I wonder if pavers would work as well. I was going to put brick pavers around the outside of the coop/run. It's probably a bit more expensive?

I think the reasons for digging in are two-fold.

It looks nicer.

And it's funnier to see an animal go to the trouble to dig and then be foiled!

People do lots of things without really thinking about them.

We buried metal sheeting 2 feet in the ground all the way around. Easy? No. Effective? Yeah, it is.

The point is it's no more effective to do all the digging than it is to simply lay wire flat on the ground.

But if you just enjoy moving dirt, no one will stop you

Hey, thanks for your permission! You're the best!

My son and I are well along in the coop construction and the run comes next. Thanks for all of the suggestions and advice. I think I may try the flat approach as we have well-established trees nearby and cutting roots ain't my idea of fun. I gave that up when I left the Infantry!

Super forum!

If you lay the wire down as a skirt, it allows the grass to grow thru and you can easily mow over it or weedeat it to keep thing neat, Just remember to attach the edge at the fenceline to the run base so they can't squeeze thru.
