If they are fancy, small, rare, or silkies you need to consider more weather protection than regular 'chicken' chickens. You might be able to just prop a piece of wood in front of the door. It would help with wind block and still allow for plenty of evaporation. Deep litter composting generates heat. If they get too cold they will snuggle in. A wide roost is good for keeping their feet warm.
