Dill's Giant Atlantic pumpkin diary

The thing to remember is that what I do is because I live on a sand dune. Sand doesn't hold water or nutrients very well.

When I lived where there was good soil, I might water once a week for 6 to 8 hours at a time.
I forgot to mention that I grow everything in mineral tubs. There are are 13 3/4 holes in the bottom of the tubs for drainage. The soil mixture is a combination of potting soil and peat moss, and manure and perlite.

In order to get more accurate measurements I took a 4' level and 2' square with me. The more accurate dimensions are 19" long, 18 1/2" wide and 15" tall for 2,761 cu. in.

Based on a specific gravity of 1.0 the weight would be approximately 96 lb. Mature pumpkins are relatively hollow and are said to have a specific gravity of 0.77. I don't believe this one is mature yet as it is still growing. Based on a specific gravity of 0.77 the weight would be 74 lbs.

No new growth since last Tuesday. It appears to be done growing and getting closer to being ripe.

Hey R2elk,
Was wondering how the pumpkin is coming along? I know you said there was no new growth but sure like to see a picture of it when you take it off the vine.

It's small enough I can take a picture when I put it on the scale. It's not ripe yet but growth is over and it is changing color.

Current forecast is for no frost this month. That is very likely to change.

Hey R2elk,
When do you think you will cut them from the vine? The anticipation is killing me too see them away from the vines!!!! Since mine got destroyed by the rabbits.

Probably after the first frost. I have no idea when that will be. The chickens decided they aren't waiting for them to ripen.
