direct tv...

Since the multichannel blackout I called Directv, so see when my contract ends.
turns out next month , when i will have to decide what to do bc my bill will go up.

They have now turned on 8 Encore channels thru all of July for residental customers,
& turned on SHowtime channels for me until the dispute is over bc i called.

I've got Direct TV. It's expensive and my contract has
been out a long time.

But I hate to change mainly because I hate to have another
system installed. Had the other satalite tv system before. A
real lame "install" with wires everywhere. It went out every time
the sky was overcast. Repair service was even worse.

If it was just up to me, I wouldn't have a tv at all. Much rather
read a book.

But the tv here has to be something simple to use and reliable
in almost any weather for my wife and parents.

And to that goal, I have to give it to Direct TV as being the better
satalite tv system.

Seems to me Viacom makes an owns the product. They have every right to set there price of that product. DTV is a retailer. There only options are to pay up or stop selling the product. But DTV is under contract to provide the product. That makes there only option paying up....

Seems to me that DTV is in breach of contract with its subscribers right now. Viacom is not....

DTV has not got a leg to stand on an they know it. The people want what Viacom has an they will go elsewhere to get it.

direct tv is the cheapest around here and over the best in reception. they are "trying" to make a deal with viacom to were you could possibly pay for only the channels you want. hmmm lets see whats new from direct tv:

Viacom wants you to pay over 30% more to get back the same channels you had, including channels you might never watch. You should be able to decide which Viacom channels you want and which you don’t.

DIRECTV is in active negotiations with Viacom. Click here for the latest.
Programming and Free Previews added for DIRECTV customers. Click here for more.

it says that viacom has also pulled there programming off the web as well so you cant view it for free anymore online

DIRECTV has been meeting several times daily with Viacom to bring back its most popular channels as soon as we can. We had more conversations today with progress being made. We don’t anticipate this lasting much longer, but in the meantime, we announced today that we’re adding Disney Junior this Saturday morning. We’re also opening up a free preview of MLB Extra Innings for all of our customers through July 19 on channels 719-749. Rest assured we will continue our negotiations with Viacom all weekend. Thanks again for your patience, and continue to check www.DIRECTVpromise.com for the latest info.

Viacom can’t get anyone to believe they’re not the ones responsible for cutting off DIRECTV customers’ TV channels Tuesday night, and then less than 12 hours later, denying everyone in America from getting their top hits for free online. Rather than listen, Viacom’s turning up the volume on a planned radio blitz across top US cities to interrupt everyone’s relaxing weekend. Moms and dads are already fed up with Viacom using SpongeBob and Dora to frighten their children.

Viacom’s full-page newspaper ads featuring Jon Stewart and Steven Colbert talking about ‘people’s freedom’ fell completely flat when Viacom themselves shut down both TV and Internet access to those very same shows. Consumer protection and free speech advocate Public Knowledge decried their “overreaction as unprecedented.”
Rather than ramp up the propaganda in newspaper ads and radio spots, all DIRECTV wants is to get the channels back on the air without an unfair increase to customer bills. We want to enable our customer to enjoy programming, not deny it, so we’ve added 8 new Encore services and opened up PBS Sprout, The Hub, TV One, Fuse and other programming to hopefully help offset some of the inconvenience this has caused. Viacom just needs to grow up and stop with the misleading propaganda, no one is buying it, and focus their efforts at the negotiating table.

More than 850 small and medium-sized independent cable companies, primarily serving the nation’s rural and small suburban communities, today threw their collective weight behind DIRECTV, stating that unnecessary blackouts like the one Viacom is foisting on DIRECTV’s 19.9 million customers must end. Matt Polka, president and CEO of the American Cable Association that represents the small systems stated today: “Viacom insists on being richly rewarded not for the quality or popularity of its content but for its sheer ability to muscle distributors — including small, independent cable operators with no bargaining leverage – into overpaying for marginal services. How broken is today’s programming marketplace when customers of not just smaller, independent operators suffer at the hands of media conglomerates like Viacom, but also the customers of a company with national scale like DirecTV? DIRECTV is nearly three times the size of the ACA systems, which serve approximately 7.4 million combined subscribers. ACA’s 850 systems are the latest to rally to DIRECTV’s customers’ cause, as the nation’s fifth-largest cable operator Cox Communications did the same two days ago, and the American Television Alliance threw its weight against blackouts yesterday, too.

what some customers are saying:

Directv STAND YOUR GROUND! I support a business that does it's best to keep costs low and do what is right for its customers. I will happily do without those channels as long as necessary, and permanently if necessary, but I refuse to pay more.
Using cartoon characters to spread their message to our children? How low can they go? How childish and shameful.
I too believe a VIACOM BOYCOTT is in order.

I support directtv for standing up. But will we get a discount on our bill for the days that we dont have these channels. I know several people that didnt even notice the channels gone but with out those channel I might as well turn the tv off. most of the channels they took wernt really taken from adults but from the little kids i dont see the point in punishing 5 and 6 year olds from good clean and skill building shows just so the adults will have to pay more.

It's funny, because Viacom's playing the victim, making YOU guys look like the bad guys, when it's actually reversed in reality. They're the bad guys, where as you (and the customers) are the actual victim.

I am glad DirecTV is getting the backing of their competitors. This just means ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! Media conglomerates like Viacom are like bullies in school and will railroad smaller kids which are the smaller cable providers until the big kids step up and take Viacom and other greedy companies down to size. If DirecTV did not take a stand, companies like Viacom would bully all cable and satellite operators and cause price increases that are out of control for everyone. If customers of DirecTV switch to another provider, this only sends the wrong message to Viacom that cable and satellite customers will pay anything to keep their shows. Let's show these media conglomerates that we mean business and stand behind DirecTV who look after us to keep the cost low! Thank You DirecTV for all your efforts. Do NOT let Viacom win!
I WILL STAND BEHIND DIRECTV NO MATTER THE OUTCOME. I DO NOT NEED THESE 17 CHANNELS FOR THE ASKING PRICE. I AM EVEN TAKING A STEP FURTHER. I AM BOYCOTTING ALL MOVIES MADE BY VIACOM'S COMPANIES LIKE PARAMOUNT BECAUSE THEY NEED TO BE SENT A HARSH MESSAGE!

  • I believe that standing up for your customers is the right thing to do, but if we loose 26 channels we agreed to pay for our bill should reflect that. If you are not paying Viacom right now why are we paying you the same rate?

  • DIRECTVPromise_Sonya
There are only 17 channels. Viacom’s double-counting both high definition and standard definition versions of the same service.

I am Very upset that we have lost our BEST channels......MTV and nick is what we watch all the time....Directv needs to quit being so cheap and dish out alittle more money if thats what it takes to get us our channels BACK......

Dish network and 12 months of reduced monthly satellite bill is very appealing at this time. I've done my research and can't find any complaints against Dish that I don't already have with DirecTV. My family took notice of this inconvenience after a few hours. I'm way past fed up. Let's see if this comment is published.

If the product isn't good quality or popular why would they want to carry it ?

Why do Direct TV adds say they have 30 million customers but now say about 20 million ?

Viacoms contract with Direct is 7 years old how much has Direct raised the rates in the last 7 years ?

Direct TV just sends what someone else has made.

Viacom put there money at risk to produce a product.

But do you know what one makes the most profit ?

im reporting from their site...

i think some shows on nick are stupid but it entertains my lil ones and dora, dago, and those shows are good for my lil ones i would sit in the room with them and play along with them to some of those shows. mtv yea what happened to the music on that channel?? i like cmt and spike ( idk all the channels that were taken off) granted i could live without them but there seems to be mixed feelings about this all over the board :-/ i just want it fixed without a huge increase to me

Direct said Viacom wants $1billion more well lets just say that true so with 20 million customers that's about $4.20 a month.
Now a $4.20 cent increase after 7 years is not that much.
I'll bet that when it's all done Direct will raise your bill by at least $10 a month.

I have DTV also, I am still paying for those stupid channels. It seems to me that Viacom is targeting family's with children. I don't have small children anymore, and back when I did, we never had tv like that, My kids were lucky to watch Sesame Street before lunch, and cartoons while waiting for dinner. Other then that they were sent outside to play. I am a fan of they giving Encore free it makes it better for me, since those other channels never get used here.

How can you say "Viacom is targeting family's with children" ? They took all there programing off not just the kids shows.
