what direction should a window face in a chicken coop

Welcome to BYC! I personally have one facing East for first lite, and another facing North just for ambient light and a cross breeze. The door to the run faces South. I do not have any windows on the West side.

My second coop also has a window facing East and the door to the run faces South. No other windows in that one bought it second hand and just haven't put another in yet.

You could have windows all the way around if you want. It never hurts to allow more ventilation/sunlight into the coop. But when winter weather arrives you may want to be able to shut off the airflow through some of the windows, depending on your prevailing wind direction. That way you have a well lit coop with controlable ventilation. Like in my coop, all the windows are opened for the warmer months, then closed for the winter. I still have a well lit coop, plus more than enough ventilation from the open front.

I have 3 windows , 2 that are hinged for opening and closing on the east and west side. 1 on the southside, it is a awning glass pane type that is used for the sun in the winter time, also all of them can be used for ventilation to.

Here's one of my coops it has three windows. The north wall has no windows. I live where its really hot so the windows are needed to help keep the birds cool. The coop is also positioned under a tree for shade.

I have 2 windows-one on the north side and one on the south side. The south facing window is great on sunny winter days. It warms up the coop nicely. The window on the north side is good for cross ventilation most of the year until it gets too cold (lows 30 or below) then I close it up. I also have a screen door facing east that I use spring through fall. Good luck with your coop!

Do you know which windows you like to have open on your house, to get the best breezes? That can help you figure it out.

I have most of my windows on the east and west sides, including the big ones. They give a lot of cross ventilation, plus light early and late in the day.

My north wall is solid. That's the wall I designed the roost to be up against. We usually get a big drift there in the winter.

My south wall has the pop hole door and another small window. The run used to be shaded by a big tree, but now it's roofed. It keeps it in the summer, plus keeps out the rain and snow.
