We've never fed our 12-13 week old chickens grit. We don't have any grit for our baby chicks. So what EXACTLY does grit do? And can dirt be grit?

Hmmm...I was told when I first put my chicks outside to forage that the rocks in the dirt would be grit enough for them. I haven't given my pullets any grit yet, but I am sure they have had plenty of grit "free-ranging" in their 500sqft run. I wouldn't worry over much. I only plan to provide grit once they are at laying stage and only then for the added calcium.

Their need for grit can be satisfied with just pecking and scratching in the dirt while outside. They will pick up gravel, small rocks, sand and dirt that will do the job. Over time, the "grit" will break down getting smaller or time and will eventually pass through their digestive tract. Don't waste your $$ on a bag of rocks.

If you offer oyster shells to your layers, that will work as both a grit that grinds the feed and as a Ca source.

I was under the impression these chickens were in a confined space where they could get nothing but dirt. Mine free range and pick up what they need. I have an oyster shell feeder for extra calcium if they need it.

Sorry I forgot to mention they are free ranging in our backyard. They have to go in so the dogs can eat, drink, and do their business. Training them now to respect the chickens. So hopefully they can coexist in the backyard soon so the chickens can be out even longer!
