Dirt floor in coop -- not such a good idea

I have a dirt floor in the yard part of our big coop. At first- it would be all mud every time it rained. I dug a little trench around it- kind of a french drain. No problems since. Every time it gets stinky in the winter (free-range in summer) I throw a tub of sawdust in there. They LOVE it.

Thanks for all the input. I do like that they can be the chickens they are on the dirt floor.

I have some old metal roofing that I could put down a foot or so .......lots of digging. I could buy hardware cloth ........ still, lots of digging. I suppose I could dig a narrow trench and fill it with cement. That is what I am doing in front of the gate to their run. Still, I am tired of digging! I just dug all around their run and haven't even got that trench filled in yet.

I suppose there is no easy way. I am just not as strong as I was when I was younger and don't have as much steam for the big projects. I don't know how I got to be 66 in such a short time......and all the grandkids and great grandkids. Yikes!

Thanks for the help.
