A few of my girls have a dirty butt. They all seem to be eating, drinking and laying normal. They stay in their coop until late afternoon where they get out and free range for a couple hours before dark. No food change or anything new. I haven't seen anything new with their poop either. Any ideas?

Sometimes hens just get dirty. I think it is because their wild ancestors didn't have as fluffy back-ends as modern breeds that they have a tendency to get messy feathers on their back end.

If it is really messy, it may be due to eating a lot of fruit or drinking a lot because it is extra hot out.

I hope this helps. Best of luck!
