Both videos were very informative. It does seem like they would vaccinate the chicks while still in the eggs since this seemed easier and less traumatic to them (through the amniotic fluid.)

I really hated seeing all those babies on the conveyor belts. Yikes!

I've seen the Dirty Jobs one when it was on TV but not the How it's made video. Those chicks are handled pretty rough, obviously it is fine as they live through it but seems like a little chick soccer to me.

I really had no idea how much crap chicks go through at hatcheries when they are being processed. Expecially those that are commercialy sold for egg or meat reasons. I really do feel bad for them and wish I knew this before I ordered some back last month.

those poor little babies, makes me sick. I guess i want ever buy any, if I have any chicks they will have to hatch they normal way. A lady gave me some chicks the other day off criags list, she didn't know what kind they were, just said she got them in with her order from Ideal. Well, they are Welsummer's, and i got 8 of them. They are kind of skidish, but if I had been through that, I would be skidish too.

Has anyone here tried the vent sexing successfully? I think the hardest part for me would be squeezing the baby. I'd be afraid of killing it.

I don't think it's all that bad. You get the sex of the chicken you want, and the option of having them vaccinated. =3

Those two things seem like plusses to me... and the chicks seem to be doing alright, despite their ordeal.
