I saw the Murray McMurray one on You Tube. I couldn't believe how roughly they treat the babies! They just dump them on to a conveyor belt one big tray at a time. They throw them down shoots, toss them around, etc. Poor little things. I'm surprised they live through it all and then go through the trauma of being shipped in a box to someone's house. They must be tougher than I thought.

commercial eg layer houses are actually not inhumane to the hens. there are some very good regulations in effect that have been independently researched to ensure the health of the animals.

i prefer my hens eggs too, but commercial egg laying houses are providing eggs to the rest of the world that hasn't caught the chicken bug. if they're members of the united egg producers, they're doing all they can to create a healthy enviroment for the hens.

i also LOVE dirty jobs!! mike cracks me up!! can't wait to see him shovel chicken poo!

I don't know what a bettery or battery hatchery is. Never heard of it.

But I did see the show when he went to McMurray Hatchery. I thought it was a great show!

pssst -- to the poster who seemed unsettled about how a chick is sexed, yes it's a little surprising when you first see it done, but I guarantee you those folks do know what they are doing, and they aren't hurting the chicks. I promise you they aren't.

I think the best Mike Rowe show was when they were catching those Lake Erie snakes. OMG, I was dying....

I watched one of them where they were making some gormet dog food out of extra cow parts.. pretty sick

any way they get to one of the steps and the woman say oh my daughter handles that .. he gets to her and she is beautiful, young, has a great bod, blond.. totally out of place with her job.. well you could just see him all falling over himself flirting with her.. it was funny..
