Dirty, Poopy BUTTS!!

I have a mix of girls, mostly barnies. My black girls, who I believe are part barred rocks, have the dirtiest butts! They are healthy, happy, laying, doing everything as normal, but their butt feathers under the vent catch all of their poo.

I have spent a good part of an hour soaking and cleaning their backsides, only to have it build up again after a couple of days. This is gross, what can I do?

Sorry you are feeling invisable!! Once and a while my chickens need some assistance in personal hygiene.

I suppose it is just part of the duties of keeping chickens.

If you want them to look clean, you have to clean them when they get all poopy.

Cut the feathers that are the messiest. I would do that before I cleaned messy butts on a regular basis (ie, more than just a sick chicken).

Thats what I do I try to keep their feathers trimmed to keep poopy butts down.

hey during inspection yesterday after my rooster clearly was busy mine had... sticky vent feathers

I had two of my hens rushed to the bathroom for poopie butt cleaning and removal.

Later that day they were basking in the sun.

Routine around here.
