Had a mishap with incubator during hatch and some eggs were not turned in the last week of incubation.
Hatch rate plummeted to only 50%
5/6 chicks normal and healthy.
1/6 has leg deformity
I was hoping it was only splayed leg and braced legs to regain muscle strength, although I knew it was more than that.
The little chick can move, although not well. But it non stop peeps whereas the others get cozy and mostly just peep for more water when theirs needs refreshing.
Im worried that the chick is in constant pain, and that is the cause for the peeping. Could it possibly lead a good life under my care? Or should I cull?
I call him Polio.

Hi!

The last week of incubation is the least important for turning as they are larger now inside of the egg and can't get stuck. I would say that had nothing to do with this. I commonly do a 5-day lockdown as I have silkies that have pipped before on Day 18.

I get one like this little cutie every so often, and they lead a perfect life after treatment. All you need to do is bind the legs with Vet Wrap or a Band-Aid for a couple of days. I would also get some Nutri-Drench or Poultry Cell and put it in their water every other day. B-Complex would help this one too but you'll have to crush one and divide it into 8ths. Yours looks like it might have a disjointed leg, but if that's the case, the treatment is the same, but it just might take more than a couple of days. We had one that took two weeks.

Baby chicks peeping are usually cold. Do you know what the temp is in your brooder? It should be around 95F for the first week or so, then down by 5 degrees each week.

They are under a large brooder plate so they should be ok for temp. I will double check. Maybe they are getting a draft in the room they are in. The others in the group are pretty quiet that where my concern is stemming from. But Im super happy to hear all of this, I have already been giving him nutridrench I will start up vitamins in water next and re stabilize his little leg again. I appreciate your response!!!! TYSM!

Learned about the chick sandal to retrain toes to be straight as well! I see progress already in posture. Thank you again for the help!
