Hello everyone,

I have a roo who sustained a spinal injury by accidentally getting kicked by one of my horses.
He survived thanks to his incredible will to live. But, one week post trauma, he still has a limp neck and cannot stand on his own (I spend most of his day turning his position to keep him stable and comfy).
He is still being syringe fed by me, and I don't suspect this changing much due to the severity of his injury, and the damage done.
I stretch his legs daily, and he can grasp my finger sporadically upon command. He is making some slight improvement. He is getting little bugs around his head from what I believe to be an attraction to some caked-on "Exact." So, moving-on, I have some questions for those of you that might have some contact information, or are dealing with a similar situation:

1. Can I bathe him? So far, I have been using cornstarch to "dust" him. I do wipe as much residual as I possilbly can from his syringe feeds, but because he is so fragile (loosing some feathers and has exposed skin on his neck), I need to exercise extreme caution with clean-up procedures.

2. Does anyone use (or know of where I can find) a "contraption" such as a small wheelchair that could help him get around and/or lift his head?

3. Does anyone use (or know of where I can find) small enough diapers to use on him? I suppose preemie, human baby diapers might suffice- but they might be too big for him.

I thank you for any advice or information you can provide. I would also be very interested to connect with other people that are accomodating a disabled chicken.

Warmly,
Luckyroo

Wow, Don't know who's the luckier roo.

1- Yes you can bathe a chicken. I'll attach some instructions. From what I've read it about the same as bathing other animals, and chickens often like it. Be sure to keep them warm.

2- No clue???

3- Several members here make diapers for chickens. lovemychix is one. I've attached a link to a thread.

Good luck with your roo,

I don't know about wheelchairs.... but look in the childrens toy section and see if you can find something there. Perhaps a baby buggy or a toy shopping cart. Also for diapers you can go to www.chickendiapers.com She can custom make them for you. Be sure to tell her the situtation as that might make a difference in how it needs to be sewn. As for washing I have used baby shampoo or Dawn - but in very small amounts. Towel dry. I suppose they could get used to a hair dryer on low but he has enough stress. Good luck

That's one lucky rooster to have a human so dedicated to caring for him.

I knew someone who had a wheelchair of sorts for her tiny dachshund who only had three legs. Maybe try looking up dog wheelchairs and see if you can find one for a teacup poodle or some other tiny breed?

There are 18 inch doll called american girls you can order little wheel chairs for them may be to small but then again may work log onto google and serch it you can probuly find out how tom order one how big they are and how much they cost have you ever thought of a back and leg brace? Pricy but good...OOOOHHHHH What about a doll walker a little tweeking and that might do the best right there... Sorry bout that roo hope he gets better soon...

Best wishes Holly

This is a chair I made for my handi-capped goose. I was later going to add wheels, but I lost him and his buddy to a freak accident.

Give your roo poly-vi-solliquid childrens vitamins, and vitamin E capsules. Squeeze the E out of the capsule into his mouth. This helps a lot
