Disappointing Kitchen Accessories

The last time we had to get a new fridge, we went with one that has the freezer on the bottom.  My thinking is that since cold air sinks, it's more efficient to have the freezer lower down so that when we open it (it's a drawer type one) the cold stays in it instead of sort of "falling out" like it does from an upper freezer with a swing door.  It's a 3 door "French" type setup and we've been really pleased with it.  I'm amazed at how much stuff we can get in that freezer!

Ah. Having the freezer be a "drawer" would be tons better. Mine just had a swing out door. Other than the freezer section being on the bottom, it was identical to any freezer on the top model. In your case, that does make perfect sense. I'd still not like to dig around on the floor for frozen food but with it being a pull out thing, at least it wouldn't be as difficult.

me too...and to defrost just put that hot cast iron pan in it and let it do it's thing. That was how my mom defrosted it. Life has changed.

And they are much easier to clean. We have one in the garage as well I tossed out more veggies with a standard fridge and hated cleaning it now it stays clean and I never was my veggies everything is easy to see I spend more time in the fridge section than I do in the freezer so having it on top makes total sense for me.

Getting back to "Disappointing Kitchen Accessories" I bought 2 new skillets from Farberware the other day;

and I have had mixed results with them. They do distribute the heat evenly and the dimpled surface does do a nice job of browning meat like sausage patties, but that same dimpled surface doesn't work out so well for eggs over easy.

I've gotten so I won't use "non stick" anything. At first it was because I have parrot types in the house and overheating a non-stick puts off a gas that will kill the birds.

But now, I have some 50's skillets and stainless steel and just plain love them. They are fairly "non stick" anyway and no coating to wear off so they need replacing.

I can not have an "oversized" refigerator, side by side for my small gallery style kitchen. Why everyone likes "bigger is better"? Sometimes I often wonder about those under counter refigerators that some European kitchen sometime have. It would be great for saving up counter space! And no worries about having one part going out while the other one still working! Like if your freezer goes out, your refigerator still works. Or your stackable washer/dryer combo...been there before! My dryer went out but my washer didn't. I thought about getting just a new dryer but it was cheaper to get the combo sets and they are on sale. Or your microwave/light hood combo..yep, happened to me when the micro broke in Oct, 2011 and haven't used it since then, except I used the hood lights and timer and the non functioning room in the micro was used for bread storage like our old bread drawers that our grandparents had! Worked but I found out that I didn't miss my microwave that much.

So combo sets/units have their advantages and disadvantages. I am going to see about getting a good counter microwave, make a shelf on top of range and install a hood light under the shelf. When your microwave goes out, there you go, replace one stuff instead of two.

I don't use the spray attachment that comes with the sink outfit. It sprays on everything including the walls which I don't need a wet wall!

It took me a while to learn, but I got it now. Every couple of years I bought fairly good sets of non-stick pans (like farberware) and they would work fairly well when they were brand new and slowly some pieces that I used the most would wear out and I would repeat that cycle again and again. The last time I bought Caphalon. Boy what a difference!!! I bought mine 4 years ago and they are going strong. They really really work and best of all, you can use them on top of the stove and in the oven, lids, handles all oven proof. The darn things will probably outlast me and they have a lifetime guarantee!! Worth every penny and I got them all on sale (still not cheap) but I'm not replacing them every couple of years either.
