Disappointing Kitchen Accessories

If I'm cooking in a pressure cooker, I can hit the release button or run it under some cool water for quick cooling but if you do that when you're canning, you're generally asking to have the contents of your jars come flying out all over the inside of the pot. That's why I wondered when you said you don't need to let it cool, LOL. Again, I misunderstood...I was thinking canning, not cooking. Sheesh...I need some of that memory stuff...what's it called?? Oh yeah...ginko...I keep forgetting ;) I always found the sound of Grandma's old one kind of scary...all that hissing and rattling, but the new ones...they're much quieter and with the built in vents and such...I never even think of there being a "boom" LOL

Those popsicle sticks are really handy for all kinds of stuff. I use them a lot for non-food items, or should I say non "human" food items. I use them for mixing dirt in my seedling pots and things like that. When they get too dirty, I break 'em into smaller pieces and toss them in the compost pile.

I sure couldn't and wouldn't recommend one way or the other to anyone...I don't feel I really know enough and I'm sure no scientist. But those things all together make me nervous about soy, so I just steer clear. Personally, I think natural fed animals, without all the chemicals, antibiotics and hormones are just better for us...our bodies know what to do with things we've been eating for thousands of years. Also personal, but I don't think humans were meant to be either herbivores or carnivores...our dentition is made for omnivorous eating. Hehe, I'd have an almost impossible time trying to give up meat...I just like it too much! Plus, I think it's part of an overall healthy and balanced diet. I do thing we Westerners eat too much of it...I'm appalled when I see a 16 oz (or more) steak on a menu! It's probably healthier the way the Asians do it...basically just using it for flavoring rather than a whole course, but I do generally eat 3 to 4 ounces with a meal. It's a vice ;)

I considered these, but got to thinking...what if our power went out in the middle of a batch? LOL...doesn't happen often but it'd be a pain if it did.

How is it you don't have to let it cool down? I'm trying to figure that out.

I mean I do not have to worry about cooling it as it automatically switches over after the cook time is up. I just let it me or release the pressure, same concept but much safer.

We have snow...

better go lock my girls up.

What is a peanut butter stirrer?

I can quick cool my old 1950's Mirro pressure cooker real easy. Put it under running cold water. It's even recommended for some things. Naturally it's small enough to do that. I think I'd have a really hard time doing that with a giant canner but you NEVER quick cool when canning anyway. Those old things (and the new ones too) have a safety valve and won't blow up. After having witnessed one blow a safety valve (which is in reality a material that melts under a certain amount of pressure and pops a hole in it real fast) I'm not afraid of one exploding. It's only the old ones w/out that feature that are in danger of doing that. I'd NEVER try to use one w/out it.

I had one of the old ones as well I was cooking lentils in it

and when I went back into the kitchen they were all over my walls, vent and ceiling.

HAHAHHA .. This means "pay attention to the jiggling gauge" .. if it stops, something is seriously wrong. Lentils shouldn't need a pressure cooker though! They cook really fast w/out soaking!

Ahhh, gotcha now hennotrooster. There I go, not quite "getting it again''!

LOL, beans and rice and all that stuff can be tricky in a pressure cooker. I was doing beans for the first time ever and evidently didn't have enough water in there...what a mess! They were all in the cooker but spattered all over and clogging up everything!

Lehman's has some great stuff, but I've often found you can find much better pricing on similar items elsewhere. Can't say I've been disappointed with anything I've ordered from them, though. We got their Roma Food Mill for processing tomatoes (you can do other soft fruits as well) and it's awesome! We did 2 full cases of tomatoes in about 3 hours with it the first go round. Hoping to use it for more things this year...we got it toward the end of the season, so only used it about 4 or 5 times.

Thanks again! If I do have a heart attack, I am firmly convinced it isn't because of my cholesterol. In spite of everything the doctors have been indoctrinated to believe, there is NO PROOF that high cholesterol is symptom that a person is at risk of heart attack and that the cholesterol level alone needs correcting with drugs.

Insist on getting the full report and look up all the stuff your complete cholesterol report really says, and if you're like me, you might find that your level is actually only "borderline" - and even then if you completely throw out all the results that show you have tons and tons of "good cholesterol" to fight the bad stuff. BAH. Stupid doctors. My BLOOD PRESSURE is the problem. Just because your charts show mine as "borderline high" for my age (hmm.. and so is the cholesterol...) does not mean it's safe for ME. My blood pressure has always, and I mean ALWAYS, from a teen to a hard smoking adult, been lower than expected. And now it's "borderline high" with spikes (really HIGH ONES) during the day. And which are they worried about? yeah. Dumb.
I totally agree. It's just another reason to put people on more drugs. Just makes the drug companies rich.

My husband found an interesting article linking the levels of Vitamin D in people to cholesterol. (wish I would have bookmarked it) It stated that when someone has low levels of Vitamin D, their cholesterol increases. (triggered by melanin in the skin) The lack of vitamin D causes their bodies to make more cholesterol. Since vitamin D is absorbed through the skin via the sun - and people now use sunscreen, it is blocking the absorption of Vitamin D into their bodies.

Well, I was I believe 21-22 and did not know any better. It was the first time I had cooked lentils and used the pressure cooker, which was a gift and Galanie I did not put the thing that would have made the jiggling noise on. I had left it in the box.

Mickey the lentils all shot through the stem that the gauge would have been resting on had I taken the time to read the instructions completely, all I did was wash thoroughly and started to cook. Then I cleaned and picked lentils off of everything for days afterward not a good thing when you are OCD.

Yes, I agree as well. Most everyone is deficient in Vitamin D, as potassium and especially magnesium. Studies have shown that sunscreen can actually cause cancer, because of the blockage of D. It's really eye-opening when you discover that the things that have been drilled into your head as 'good' are acutally bad!
