hey, I have a question- has anyone used F10 to disinfect their coop? I use it on my reptiles, but I was actually advised by the guy at my local feed store to use it and since I had it on hand i thought it'd be great. I don't know how much to use with how much water.... any other ways to disinfect the coop? (I've read vinegar and water also.) My coop is all wood with wooden perches and nest boxes.

Ammonia is very cheap and mixed with water following the directions, it is a very good disinfectant for coops. The literature on cocci recommend it's use. There is sudsy ammonia too that has the soap in it.

Lenka, I can't see why it wouldn't be great to use. This is the first I've heard of it but after doing some Google investigating, it sounds like a good product. It seems that there is only one item in the product line that is approved for sale in the U.S. (F10SC) but they are working on more. Getting the EPA approvals is an arduous process. If it is recommended by avian vets (as several websites advertise) then it should be safe for your chickens. Wood is porous and therefore more difficult to keep clean and sanitized than plastic or even wood that has been painted with several coats of semi-gloss paint but that probably just means you need to spray it down more often. For that reason, I am caulking and painting the interior of my coop before the birds take up residence. I want to make it easy to keep clean and hard for mites and other bugs to find a home. I do plan to use tree limbs as roosts but those are free and easy to come by out in the country where we live so I can just replace them as needed. From one of the websites I got this as the suggested dilutions:

The recommended dilution rates of F10SC are:
  • General disinfection at 1:500 (2ml in 1 liter of water)
  • High level disinfection against bacteria, fungi and most viruses at 1:250 (4ml to 1 liter of water)
  • For use against the most resistant viruses such as Parvovirus or PBFD at 1:125 (8ml in 1 liter or water)
