Displayed leg??

Mountain Peeps and JJSS, could this have been a brain seizure of some sort? Just throwing this out there for some ideas.

Makes about as much sense as any theory I have conjured up. I thought it could be a nerve or spinal situation but a brain seizure could do it too. Both times they seemed dazed for a day or so and then coherent and hungry/thirsty, they never could move again though.

I've not had any experience in dealing with egg binding myself, so I can only offer up what I have dealt with -- which is the tendon thing. It generally doesn't happen in adults but an injury can cause it and is usually the cause when it does happen in older birds. Like getting their leg stuck in something. It doesn't have to necessarily cause a boo-boo on the surface.

Though the purple comb throws me off. Isn't the comb changing color towards blue or purple usually sign of a problem with getting enough oxygen? This baffles me.

I look forward to keeping up with the progress. If this is some sort of new-fangeled (

) illness or ailment, I'd like to be aware of it before I have to deal with it personally.

Be safe running errands!!!

If this was possibly a stroke, half a baby asprin a day will help to keep the blood thin and prevent more strokes. I did this with Miss Molly. :)

@TwoCrows , how do you know if and when a chicken is having s seizure or has had one? I've never thought about them having those. Though I don't see why not since cats, dogs, and humans, etc can also. Durr tee durr

Ok so I did the test. I don't know how to describe what I felt since I have never done it before and since I don't know what is normal. Once my finger was in about an inch I felt something that seemed to be a little hard but nothing like the hardness of an eggshell. I also think my finger wasn't straight enough so it might have felt something off to the side.

I've never done the test before, but I have heard that you can also feel the egg like formation if anything is stuck from massaging the abdomen? Can someone that has done the finger test weigh in?

I'm rooting for you & her @MountainPeeps

Could she have flown down from the roost and hit into the side of the coop?

I once ran over one of my little game hens with one of my chicken tractors, she couldn't stand, and her face was purple and she was also breathing hard. Fortunately she recovered just fine. Could some kind of similar trauma have happened to your hen? Just brainstorming.............

Sarah, first I need to apologize for getting your birds mixed up.....it is Gracie that had the frost bite...not Sunny...

Ok...when you did the exam, did it feel like you were hitting a wall with your finger...like it was firm but seemed to end there, may be turn down to the left or right?? If so, you were in the intestines. An egg feels like an egg.. you can twirl your finger around the top of the egg and it feels hard. Generally if your finger isn't able to go straight back and it seems to want to go down, you are in the intestinal tract. If there is an egg right there, you can only go straight back. No shelled eggs feel like an egg without a shell and are very soft. If she has an egg present, you can't enter the intestines easily. If no egg is present, then you can't go into the oviduct easily.

As for a seizure, you can only watch them to know they are having one. Usually they go stiff on one side and will fall over. They don't last really long, but they will want to sleep for hours afterwards.

A stroke generally leaves them with the inability to do something, whether that be walk properly, hold their head up, breathing funny, not be able eat or drink, etc...Stroke takes a while to get over. Miss Molly took a couple months to get over her walking issues and her heart and lungs never did repair.

So if Sunny were my bird, I would keep her inside tonight somewhere dark and quiet. See if you can get her to eat. Anything. It doesn't have to even be chicken feed. Just something to stabilize the blood sugar in the brain. Then in the morning if she is able to stand up, wants to eat and drink, take her out to the coop, but I would keep her confined for that day. I would take this day by day. Let her out when you are around so you can watch her. If she returns back to normal in a couple days. than I doubt she had a stroke. If this was possibly a seizure, she may have another or maybe never have one again. But if this does happen again in the next days or weeks, then I would say yes she is having seizures. Strokes will leave longer lasting effects on the body.

Just take this one day at a time and make a decision each day as to where she is at and how she is healing and what to do for her. You know where I am and can PM me any time.

Well my mom and dad said I should take her back outside because she is doing so much better. I did and guess what? She jumped up on the roost as if nothing ever happened! Her legs are working perfectly!

I took her down though because I didn't want her to re-injure herself again.

No I felt no hard wall of any sort when my finger was in there.

Oh and no problem about mixing up my hens! It sure is hard to keep other people's flocks straight! LOL

I agree. Keep her somewhere where she can stay calm and warm and not be bothered by other animals, at least for tonight. Does she seem perky?
