Grain byproducts from brewing beer are fine also, although they are sold as Brewers Grains and have a slightly different nutrient profile. They are just a supplement to other protein sources as they are defiect in a few amino acids.
Distillers Dried Grains with and without Solubles are NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT a substitue for Corn!!!!!
DDGS is a good source of Phosphorus and "Crude" protein for Ruminants; However, they are deficient in Lysine and Methionine. These two amino acids are the most important in monogastric feeding programs. When I formulate commercial swine and poultyr feeds I use a matrix of ingredients to meet the amino acid needs of the animal which overcomes the deficiencies found in DDGS. Using DDGS as a Treat will only result in an imbalance in Amino Acids and an overconsumpton of Protein.
If you are in a commercial environment i.e. one that wants to make money, then you msut be cogniscent of the impacts of using DDGS without proper forumlation. If you are simply in a hobby operation then you can use it as a treat if you' like as feed conversion and profitability are not issues.
I picked up a couple of bags of this to try today and it has a strong, um, I don't know, beer smell I guess. Now I now if you feed a lot of fish that the eggs can start tasting fishy so I was wondering if feeding this could change the taste of the eggs or meat?
My last 1/2 ton was made with distillers grain from the ethanol plant. It did have an odor the first couple days, but after a month I don't notice it. It was also sticky and didn't flow through the bin easily the first couple days. Not sure why, but all the hog operations are complaining about that too.
The chickens seem to love it and I haven't had a decrease in laying this winter. I haven't noticed any weight loss either.
I am interested in DDG. I am just a backyarder but am unemployed and need to keep my costs low like y' all. I have dual purpose chicks and I let them out in the yard for the day and bring them in to the feed in the late afternoon. I have read this great string and I think I understand about the acids, but I have also read (elsewhere) about the increase of e coli in beef when fed DDG. Is DDG going to increase e coli in the meat? Any word on salmonella in the egg? Does anyone know of any studies done on DDG and poultry?
