We have a Barred and 2 RIR that just started laying. We are pretty sure only two of them are laying (we get two eggs almost every morning) at this point but we can't figure out which egg is from which hen. One of the eggs is a little bigger on flat (not shiny) side with very small white speckles. The other egg is much smaller and very shiny (or glassy). The bigger of the two is slightly darker.

I think the darker egg is the RIR. I have 13 hens and know exactly who laid what egg. I took a big padded cushion and took it in the coop at 7am and watched each girl get in and out of the nest. It was so fun to watch them. I took pictues of them also while they were laying and the color of their eggs. You just have to take a morning with your cup of coffee and go watch the girls in action.

Some might be grossed out by sitting in a chicken coop but my coop is always clean and fresh with a window to let some morning sunlight in. Give it a try, you will enjoy it.

I love hanging out in the coop! I bundle up and hang out with them for an hour in the winter, too!

Decompression PT (Poultry Therapy) is good for the soul.

yeah I hung out in the pen for an hour and got one of my girls laying an egg on camera. poor thing! lol. no privacy!

and I thought I was the only one...

good to know I have a "lets watch the egg come out" group....I just love it, to see them do there little job, and its all for us....

I agree! It's so much fun to watch the "laying game." Better than the morning news!

I'm 99% sure it's from one of my Barred Rocks. The BRs are 3-4 weeks older than the others and one has been doing the squat for over a week now, so I'm pretty sure it's her. The 2 eggs have been matte (not shiny), not very dark, and they have tiny white speckles. This is probably useless information, but they weighed 52g and 44g. (I've gotten fascinated with weighing eggs, since that's the way I track humidity when incubating.) It sounds a lot like the one you said was bigger. Anyway, I don't know if any of that helps you figure it out

Spending the morning in the coop sounds pretty good!

Glad to know I'm not the only "watcher" in the bunch! I pulled a chair down to the coop and "watch" whenever I can. For some reason I find it very relaxing... and now I know who lays which egg. I have also noticed one of my pulletts getting in the nest and "watching" too! I hope she is getting ideas!!!!!
