Distressed Chick. Read Other Forums, not Sure What to Do

Ouch, @Ridgerunner I've seen many of @azygous post in other threads where she has indeed given advice on heat lamp use and early chick care, and she understands as well as I do that Mama Heating Pad isn't right for every situation. I don't think (and she can correct me if I'm wrong) that she was "proselytizing". I read through the thread and I think she was strongly advising the OP to go BACK to the system the chicks were already used to. Her first response to the OP supports that, because nowhere in it does she mention MHP, instead focusing on what kind of bulb she changed to and what her brooder temps were in order to get her chicks to settle down when she was using a lamp. It was only in the second response, after the OP had mentioned that the chicks had been under Mama Heating Pad in the feed store already, that she told the OP to get them back under one because that's how it was where they came from. Since we all agree that chicks/chickens don't do change well, that answer made sense.

Now obviously @MedSchlFarmers has been able to resolve her problem with the distress cheeping chick she was hearing, and whether that happened under a heat lamp or a heating pad doesn't matter a bit. It's all good either way if the chicks are doing well and I know @azygous believes that too, as she has helped others who have been experiencing problems. Yep, she's a convert to this system.....so am I and so are lots and lots of other people. Watching Patrice Lopatin's video of raising chicks outside, and then hearing how successful it was for @Beekissed made a believer out of me, and I'm always sure to credit those who came before me. Just never heard it referred to as a "cult" before, and while there are few on BYC I have more respect for than you, I kinda don't like that description.....it makes it sound nefarious, and like a temporary flash in the pan or some kind of "get rich quick scheme" somehow. It's new, but not that new. There are threads back to 2010 where people either wondered about it or were trying it.

Personally I got a huge kick out of the fact that a feed store is using it. I've also seen representatives from hatcheries on the Mama Heating Pad thread recently as well. That sure doesn't make MHP the only way to raise chicks, and I'm the first to admit that and I've even advised against it in some situations. I've referred many a person to your system, the brooder in the coop with the lamp on one side. But it does mean that others are starting to appreciate the simplicity and the safety of using it, and if our enthusiasm for MHP comes across in our posts, I think we can be forgiven.

I do apologize for the word cult. That was bad on my part.

If you love your chicks and want what's best for them, get off your @$$ and go get a heating pad!

To me, that is kind of strong.

As a newbie I like the idea of mhp, if not for any other reason than fire hazard safety. Perhaps as time goes on it may be an investment that I consider. I was just saddened by the offensive way of suggesting it. BYC has been a wealth of information to me over the past few months, before and after I joined. I've seen several other forums where newbies were attacked and it's not nice. It could deter people from asking questions and we all learn from asking questions.

@Ridgerunner , thank you. No offense taken here at all....guess we gotta be called something, and Blooie's Broody Brigade is a bit cumbersome!

How about "advocates"?

@MedSchlFarmers , I'm sorry that you felt that way. I won't speak for @azygous but knowing her as well as I do I'm sure there was no offense intended. She's always so helpful and kind, especially with newbies. She was infinitely patient with me when I started out here on BYC and I was stressing over getting them to roost and a host of other problems I ran into. Lots of people were, @Ridgerunner included.

I'm so glad that you got your problem with Miss Noisy Chick squared away and things are going so well now! And thank you for giving me the name of the feed store using MHP - wonder if they'll notice a drop in their chick season electric bills!

Lots of us don't have our chicks yet, so we get our "chick fix" via other people's photos of theirs....hint hint!!

Aww, so cute! I'm guessing that's a little one holding the chick in the first picture.... I've never seen an Easter Egger chick that color before! Be interesting to see what color he/she grows up to be!

Your little chicks are adorable. Glad to hear they are getting along better.

I still brood with a heat lamp, I have my routine down and I like that I can look out my window and see the glow of my lamp and I know my chicks are fine. The funny thing is that I always thought that heating pads were a fire hazard, so everyone finds their own way and what works best for their situation. There's no one right way in chicken keeping. Enjoy your little chicks.
