@Beer can , videos like that is one of the reasons my son and his wife are vegetarians. We all went out to dinner last night for my late bday present. They had potato skins with no bacon....I don't think I could live without bacon. LOL!

I'm totally with you on the fact that it costs much more to do it ourselves. But really what price is the general population paying with their health eating those chickens?

Busy day today. Getting ready to meet my cousin at the track to go walking in 44F weather. UGH! I'm taking scarves, gloves, you name it. Lost a couple more pounds @perchie.girl . Not much, but just happy to be keeping it off. Have a lot of other things (stressful) going on too, so keeping it off is huge!

I rent the property to keep my chickens on. The price of organic produce, and meats in the local stores is outrageous, so I can't really say that it costs a whole lot more to do it ourselves. The pay off is in the health benefits derived from growing our own. Yes, the general population is paying with their health in a big way.

I live in the big country, plenty of local meats, three times the price. Hard to justify spending all your hard earned cash on the same thing, if you don't know what it is your getting, and the majority of people don't. Even myself who does know bought two ten pound packages of that .39cent a pound chicken even after the wife said she didn't like it the last time we bought it because some of it had broken legs, brought it home anyways cause of the price. Gotta get raising more of our own, over run in eggs right now but meat chickens not yet. Spring I hope to hatch out many sussex and giants for meat, caponizing all cockerels.
Actually quite surprised, still had some cockerels in the freezer from last September, vacuum sealed. The others we ate awhile ago were tough. Marinated one white cochin in a vinegar and herb marinade and the other a dry rub. Both on the grill were excellent, everything was excellent even the legs and wings. Only 3.5 lbs each so they were butchered young but can't say as far as texture and flavor store bought was any better, maybe store bought would have had more meat on them but these were just as good if not better.
 
Processed the rest of the baby bunnies yesterday, we had four left. They weighed 1.2, 1.3, 1.5 and 1.6 kg processed. I'm going to cook up one of those today, I'm thinking I'll throw some onions, apples and potatoes in a cast iron pot, and mix together some butter, garlic, thyme, flour, salt, dijon mustard and pepper to make a paste that I'll rub into the bunny bits, then roast it on high heat and once the meat gets a nice surface, I'll pour in some white wine and a cup of cream and that should make a pretty nice all in one pot meal.

We also did a fall clean in the bunny pen. Destroyed all of their tunnels and took out the nasty bits. It should stay clean for longer now that we got rid of most of the inhabitants. It'll be interesting to see if the two younger girls managed to get impregnated. If not, I think we'll wait until spring to try next time.
