Dixie Chicks

does anyone compost with their chickens? I've been thinking of setting up another compost ben out of pallets n leaving it open in the semi free range chicken area so they can scratch n pick thru the pile?
That works great and they love it! :)
I wanted to weight them all, but wasn't fun getting one on the scale. I thought he would have weighed more than 8 1/2 pounds, eight months and they don't put on weight until they're over a yr. Better get 13 or more.

Ok, here's my BJGs. I couldn't get any really good pics of them. And of course, everyone looks huge next to Ducky Girl.
Thise do look a bit smaller than the ones we had... but we got rid of them at about 14 months old or so... ours were nuts!

13lbs, jem, that's the standard weight.
@Razadia are those white ones your chanteclers? If they are, impressive. I saw someone else that had really nice big body ones from a hatchery.

They are. It was probably Cackle that they got them from. Cackle has some of the same stock as I do. Greg Oakes. Both of my pairs are supposed to throw SQ babies. I'll find out after this hatch since I'm keeping most of the Chanteclers I hatch.

Mine are 11 months old. They've always seemed a bit smaller than they should be. My 2 year old Production Reds (in another pen) are still bigger than a lot of this bunch, but smaller than my Buckeye hens (shown in these pictures) and Chanteclers.

your chanteclers sure are purdy :)

Jem, we kinda wing it on butchering time, when they look ready, they go to freezer camp. We are getting the next litter down there in three weeks though, so before that litter 3 needs to be processed.

I was thinking of starting with alum, supposedly that's the easiest way.
