Dixie Chicks

I use no waste dry feeders and I fill those with pellets... And I make FF and I use my wacky toilet feeders usually for that, unless it's super cold and then I bring the buckets of FF inside and feel pounds to bring out for my birds. I keep the dry feeders available all the time so that the lower-level birds are never without food. I also have to keep dry feed out because the ducks are off of the FF for the winter I'm not sure why... My FF feeders make available around the clock in a free feeding style.
I love making FF it's fun. I can add all sorts of stuff to it molasses nutritional yeast, debettered brewers yeast, dried stinging nettle...BOSS... They also get almost all the kitchen scraps, wild bird seed, and when there are cold snaps they get suet blocks...
From time to time I feed them huge quantities of garlic hopefully aiding in the prevention of parasites. I use apple cider vinegar in the water and occasionally in their FF....
I chose FF mostly because it's probiotic and probiotics are almost always good thing. Plus if you soak a grain you break down the anti-nutrients that the grains/seeds used to protect themselves I think the anti nutrients are largely to dissuade animals from their consumption as well as preventing them from sprouting until conditions are optimum...
AVC in the FF mother culture to help in fermentation, The other additives I use in my FF are mostly for a vitamin boost there's lots of trace minerals and nutrients in molasses etc. the seeds are a treat, suet is a nice high fat supplement for them when it's cold... Fat Equals higher calories... Also I have fed them coconut oil before, it's a nice saturated fat that mimics animal fat so I figured my chickens would enjoy it.
Wow I apparently really like talking about what I feed my chickens...

@hennible I think I'll feed more FF come spring... It would be nice to make it in our garage (you know the one attached to the new house!). It'll take a lot of love to convince hubby that I can have a little bit of space in "his" new garage.

ok I am feel totally ignorant in asking this however............when I go to my local feed store they say there is no intermediate feed between chick starter and layer.........I thought there was a grower pellet?

Hi V. How does your vehicle travel on the snow? Without Nokia tires correct?
The Nissan is great in snow, even though it's not a real terrain vehicle, the 4WD is good enough to not get in trouble as long as there's something resembling a road underneath you. The Peugeot can be a bit trickier in deep snow.

Our feeding is hippy dippy grain mix in one feeder, 27% protein condensed feed in another one (both are the no waste bucket feeder types), and then they usually get some sort of mash (mostly a 50-50 mix of those two feed) every day. Plus we throw some whole oats in the run for them to dig around in the straw. Not with chicks they're getting slightly more interesting food, egg, more veggies, berries etc.
