dont to ask a dumb question but Butler wouldnt mount the hens if he wasnt yanno fertile? or I should say ready to be fertile?

It might take him a while to get the hang of it, and he probably could start on a girl that's about to start laying before she's actually started making eggs. Look for the bulls eye in the eggs you get to see if he's hitting his mark. The cloacal kiss probably isn't that easy to master right away.

I think the instinct to do it is there and these may be trial runs because it's nature. But I would think that fertility isn't far off if it isn't there yet. Like a hen that squats she ain't laying yet but it's close.

Our first 8 eggs we got came when our oldest roo at the time was I think 12 or 13 weeks old. About half of those eggs were fertile.

Jem, the cloacal kiss, since chickens don't have penises, they procreate differently. The male and female line their cloacas against each other and the semen is transferred from the male to the female.

Jem, the cloaca is the all purpose hole birds have. It's used for procreation and pooping, and egg laying too if you don't count that as at least an attempt at procreation.
