Not really, I've got the run pretty well protected from snow. It needs to be really dry for it not to do that though. I only get snow in during snow storms, but we've managed to clear that out before it thaws.

Oh, and waterers that spill would be an issue too. That's why I prefer absorbent bedding. But the sand is a great base in the run (or in a coop), it's also a good source for grit. Sand might be a bit too definite for what I've got in there though, it's actually soil from a spot where a sand box used to be 10 years ago. So maybe 80-90% sand.

Dairy farms around here used to use sawdust for cow bedding. Now all sawdust gets made into wood pellets a lot of them are using sand. A dairy barn is a lot warmer than a chicken coop though.

Hmm, I don't know why people are afraid of pellets. It's a great material, and by the time it's absorbed the moisture it's the same as sawdust. Just doesn't kick up as much dust when you put it down. At least that's what I've noted with the stuff.

By the way, they make straw pellets too.

I think I might just try sand in my poop trays then and rather than dumping them I'll scoop them if I don't like it screw the sand and back to shavings... I don't think sand would be great bedding for the ducks sense they are so wet... :/ ( it's my thinking face )

Cool Vehve!

Sounds like a good plan hen. I want to try that out. I think. I keep going back and forth - Poop boards...no poop boards. ???
