Dixie Chicks

oh wow brain bubble on my part.. I was thinking mine were about four weeks.......but only 20ish days...... they are getting so big so fast...they almost seem about the size of the five week olds I got.......... do birds grow faster or slower when raised by the hen versus ppl?

Yup, I've accepted that all our chicks are dudes...

Ravyn, you were talking about a compost, post a pic of the spot you're thinking of putting it in in my compost thread and we'll try to think of something.

Thanks, Felix! Will do that tomorrow, or rather later today... oops, should prolly get some sleep soon... that thread would be the one I just found that Amberjem was chattin' on, yes? I have no issues posting it on here, Amberjem, but if figuring it out will help another then it will prolly be best to post on that thread... :)
Expect dudes and you get pleasant surprises with dudettes, lol. Jim keeps falling in love with the boys, so we have to keep making more coops/pens... I never thought he'd fall prey to Chicken Math worse than me, lol...

Grow faster or getting fat from being spoiled and extra treats?? ;)
JK, Jem, my experience is time of year and exposing them to outside in increasing amounts as soon as you can do it safely. Winter chicks seem to grow faster and end up hardier. IMO

hahaha...mark is so funny....... he has had pretty limited exposure to pets and animals ect..and very lil with birds.. so he has a very hesitant hand.. so often they would try to avoid his hands...and he would get nervious and notice someone might have been watching him and give up... it was a kick to watch him sitting on the floor actually petting and holding these new year chicks.......dixie is such a lil attention hog soon as your hand is near dixie is right there ready to jump onto it...I sure am hoping it's a girl has an adorable character......... one of the things that has surprised me greatly is the orpington and the orpington cross are probly the most skittish....I had really expected them to be much more cuddily...and correct me if I am wrong but yellow feet on the bottom is a sign of jersey giant right? I think the orpington cross is jersey giant orpington cross

I would say that our chicks might be growing a bit more slowly, and in stead feathering out more quickly, but that's more due to them being kept near freezing temps.
I read something somewhere that cooler temps would have them feather faster

I wonder if that holds true for the meat birds like the crosses .. I know they are slower to feather but thats because they were breed for rapid meat bulking and cant eat the feathers

Well, these are dual purpose too, being Marans crosses. I haven't held the other ones, but Flappy is pretty scrawny still. All breastbone, no muscle. He feels very delicate when I lift him up for cleaning, I'm afraid I'll break him but I have to hold him steadily, because otherwise he starts flapping like crazy (hence the name Flappy). The wings do push around quite a lot of air already though, I can clearly feel the lift generated by them.
