How about planting some wheat and oats and stuff? Make your yard a minifarm. I bet the birds would love being set free in a field of grains.

my understanding in ponds in winter the duckweed will freeze and sink to the bottom of the ponds waiting for summer when it thaws and floats back up and produces again...@vehve couldnt you set up a lil wire cage where he can be seen and see how it works maybe something can run into for safety if needed after see how everyone reacts? @Blooie set up a lil thing like that for scout... I kinda have a similar thing I set the brooder box in front of some of the nest boxes the chicks can dive behind and be safe from any big bird who decided to be a bully.. so far noones had a problem....the babys are sticking inside the henhosue during the day while the big birds ocassionally visit then go back out to forage scratch be chickens

thats what I am doing on my slopes planting different edible grasses and such....I just got a lil stalled because of the AI atm locally..

can plant millet as well

The chicks were too stupid to use the cage we had in there for them, so we took it out. It was just in the way. Flappy is pretty agile already, so I think he can just retreat to the roosts, the troublemakers don't follow the chicks there. For some reason, our biggest bullies sleep on the floor. Stupid Sussexes.
