@JW12 very sorry about your coop and chooks... What did you lose? Not a bad winter at all for us, but those 3 weeks sure made up for it... I lost about a half dozen juvies too... If you are still going to Murfreesboro soon, I can hook you up with a bunch of eggs if you want them... Just send me a PM... Oh, btw, Jim brought home 6 EE pullets from TSC too, so don't feel too bad, lol...

haha southern buttz sighs... why does it seem like ppl get chicks from feed stores and it's like a guilty secret?

ooh... I should mention, I went to "the big city" today...

of course, I stopped at the feed store there, WOW prices are so much better than back home! So nice! I bought a bunch of stuff and only spent 50 bucks!

AND, I found out that farm grade nutritional yeast is WAY less expensive than human grade.

so I bought some of that for my chickens, the ones I am hatching eggs from. Since that was a decent price I didn't even look to see if they had calf manna and the price of that.

The first hatch was bad, but NOT Sally's fault.

I was using that curse word curse word curse word hatching app, and it lied to me!!! So I stopped turning my quail eggs WAY too soon, and upped the humidity WAY too soon... I didn't realize my mistake until no quail hatched when the app said that they were supposed to.

By then, the damage was done...

Poor quail, lost a bunch, a bunch needed help, a bunch that hatched needed 'shoes' because of curled toes from the too high humidity.

total barf.... but not Sally's fault.

I am really looking forward to my first GOOD Sally hatch.

yeah.. I was wondering how we had managed it in the past... we had a giant bag of the stuff when we had horses, because we needed it for them... I couldn't remember why it was affordable until now!

is nutritional yeast for fermenting or something? whatcha use calf manna for? what big city?

I use the nutritional yeast for:

1. when I had horses, there is a poisonous weed up here, messes with the vitamin absorption of horses.. if they eat too much of the weed they start with a horrid bad full body cough, you give them the nutritional yeast and it counters the weed

2. there is never duckling feed up here, so I have to feed my ducklings un-medicated chick feed, which doesn't have enough B vitamins for ducklings, so I have to add the nutritional yeast for the ducklings

3. it has lots of vitamins and so is a great addition to breeders to make the chicks healthier/hatch better/ more likely to grow to full term and hatch (if you look at the "why my chick didn't hatch, why did the fertile egg die at day 7 or day 18 etc." charts, lots of the reasons are a lack of vitamins)

4. nutritional yeast I have to do NO preparation, no measuring, and no anything. I remember I want to feed some, a scoop some out and toss it on their feed. Yeah! Idiot proof and super easy = right for me.

Some people use Calf manna to supplement breeders...

@Amberjem dunno why feed store chicks are treated like a dirty secret... think there are 'chicken snobs' that're making it like that, lol... I love my pures, but there is a LOT to be said for hybrid vigor...

@Alaskan you're making me miss Sally, kinda... lol... I caught the probs with that app early, luckily... try customizing your hatches instead of using the presets, and it counts the day you set as Day 1... :/

Morning. I think we're going to have to plant a lot of stuff in front of the bunny pen. Once I got the siding up and painted it, it's pretty much looming over our whole back yard. Karin has been all "Noooooooo!" all morning. Even though it was her idea to get the bunny in the first place. I might put a shelf on it and keep some potted tomatoes there, the red color should boost production.

That wet my plants sign was really funny.

Ravyn, are you paying for air fare? And lodging?

Sam, I hope you get a huge harvest. Any tomatoes started yet?

We have plenty of room here for ya! And Jim might have been willing to spring for the airfare after he helped me build 4 pens and 3 coops in 3 days, but our financial situation has changed...
