Are you sure you want to ship duck eggs that far? On the other hand, duck eggs are supposed to do better then chicken eggs with shipping. Good luck with your hatch, any luck finding eggs in Alaska?

Yep, Muscovies, and shipped from the lower 48.

There is only one other person I know of with breeding Muscovies in Alaska (everyone else has Muscovies from me.. Or this other person)... And I think that my set came from her originally.

So, I really need some new blood. Also, remember that I kept loosing breeding females, I am now down to TWO female breeders, and then the one male.

The kids and I decided to raise up a replacement/back-up male from our flock, and import new girls, but also keep the two we have.


Actually, I hadn't noticed until today Because their mom Creamy likes to hide the ducklings from me... She is worried I will steal them from her, since I am "the taker of ducklings"..... Smart buggers. But because of that, I have up until now just seen the four duckling heads... Popping up behind something to watch me.

Today I snuck up, and got to see the entire bodies of all four ducklings, as well as watch them run away from me, with Creamy of course all kinds of man at me.

One of the ducklings is sway backed!!! Just like with a broken/super sway backed horse. It doesn't walk right either... But it does get around, a little smaller and not as chubby as the rest... ...... .....

Just I am not sure that it looks good enough to be able to make it to eating size. It might though... Not sure.

At a guess... I think it is an injury... Not genetic... But Definitely have some inbreeding going on, not much forking in this tree.

How hard are the chanteclers to come across in the US?

Hummmm I have seen them about.... But I haven't looked super closely.

@Alaskan new blood lines is a good thing. Actually kind of interesting to hear that not a lot of people keep ducks up there. But then on the other hand when you consider the length of winters and feed costs it does make sense.

I am really excited about the eggs from @minihorse927 I don't think anyone has recently imported good quality Ancona ducks (if any at all) into Canada. Everything seems to come from the same people here. DH picked up my incubator from the post office today and am hoping to set up a test batch of EE chicken eggs on the weekend. I have 3 eggs collected from my hen so far.

While talking about new blood lines, I have been offered a laying flock of Cayuga Ducks. Her line has not made it out to Alberta yet.

Both rare breeds I am very excited about bringing new lines in!!!

Most big hatcheries have buff chanteclers.
SandHill has white, buff, partridge, and red.

Surprisingly I haven't seen any evidence of the fox for a while. Pretty sure the neighbour down the road has been keeping him fed.

I should clarify that all the Ancona's here come from the same 2 or 3 sources which all trace back to the same original source. Sad...

SandHill sent a check for $70 today. I thought they were going to charge for the four langshans they said was in the box, they didn't even charge for the one, guess it was free along with the red sussex. All I paid for was for the giants, and then only the ten I ordered, they sent twelve, but a few died. Guess I'm not out anything except for the hair I pulled out of my noggin.

Neither have I.
Red Chantecler (AMB):  A newer creation of this breed. Shades of reddish orange. Good layers and colorful. These have not yet been admitted to the APA Standard. Chicks $6.00 each (10)(SOLD OUT THROUGH MARCH 24, 2015)

They have a quite a few unheard of breeds.
