A couple of the whiskey distilleries in my area use like on like, so whiskey barrels re-used for whiskey...although the first batch is considered the best because it gets the best of the charring (charcoal) mellowing action. Raw whiskey is pretty rough and definitely improves with age. (don't we all?)

I've drank rum which was aged in a bourbon barrel.... It was, well, bourbony.

For Peep_Show's own personal cellar, we use first-time charred oak barrels... which are a pain to get watertight (which would be probably the main advantage to using an already functioning barrel)
