He is happy no doubt! Nice boy. I wonder if it was not a protective gesture, protecting her from any in the main flock that might challenge her spot in the pecking order?

I am watching a big hen totally raise four chicks within a flock of 12 hens. She hatched from purchased eggs, and has been free ranging them daily since about a week after they hatched. When they peep with the cold weather, she gathers them under her and sits for a while. Other than that, they are free ranging with her, amazing to watch. They roost in the coop in a cat carrier on the coop floor. (All the hens tend to lay their eggs in that carrier rather than their regular nest boxes in the coop while mama hen and chicks roam outside all day.

My rooster looks super sad..
Both his gurls are sitting/broody..poor guy.. just sulks all day :'(

Quote: I think so he definitely keeps the ladys in line and watches after them carefully...and doesnt let them just go wander willy nilly here n there without supervision... I wonder that the broodys with the chicks don't just jump up to the top of the flock in pecking order bamamam sure had the whole flock cowtowing to her n the chicks..now edgna poe is taking over the chick care she is up their in the pecking order...the broodys seem to put the fear of mama into the flock probly think it has to be the safest place to lay eggs is with the broodymama.........egna was begging cuddles to me today and bringing the chicks over as I was petting her... how old are the chicks now?

"Fear of mamma" that's how my dads RIR's were, no one messed with them. Hoping these girls are the same, roo is nice never has raised cockle feathers, but he's a hugemungus monster, hope the gurls step up when chicks hatch.

These giants beat my silkies anyday, like fake chickens, I can pick them up and they never move, just stay in position, set them back down, nothing, don't streach out, try to run, even wiggle, weird.
