How did your candling go? did you eggtopsy any?

I did not bother with either.
I just laid them on their sides with the biggest part of the bubble up so they can pip more easily.

As you can see in the photo

you know their are tons of studies on lighting effects on embryos. Lighting does them good not bad. just sayin

This was part of my decision maker on my design.
It seems like whenever I block off the light, the chicks already hatched get quiet and rest. Perhaps it's the change in lighting that disturbs them, they certainly sleep under a brooder light ok.

Maybe I'm extrapolating too much from my own experience, I only sleep when it's dark.

I'm buying a red LED flashlight to see if that disturbs them less when checking for chicks in the incubator. It also might help when I'm chicken hunting at night (the only time I have a chance of catching those free range roosters).

In last 2 weeks me and daughter picked up about 20 dz night crawlers in 2 nights after rain. Before this cold snap hit us. Just chiming in because I know few people that understand why a person would be out in rain with flashlight and a coffee can wandering around staring at the ground. Unless you meant something different, in that case NVM.

Your round Taylor thermometer is actually pretty darn close, can't really be for sure since it doesn't show decimals but it is close to 98.5. I use a taylor bulb thermometer it was the most accurate looking one in the store when I compared all the models, so far it has done me good, that one attached to the plastic card is junk I threw mine out. I don't trust those digital ones either.
