DIY Duck treats/suet cakes

Okay well here's an honest answer. Don't change feed in winter. They don't need extras and killing them with kindness isn't good.

Maintaining internal body temperature in cold requires more energy in the winter, wild birds fill up on protein and fats in the fall to stay warm

and if your birds normaly free range then winter weather can make that impossible for them and thats a lost food source

Not to mention the lack of grit and natural ground minerals

Changing feeds and treats in the winter can be beneficial

I'm also not changing their food at all. Just adding a couple other options to make sure they've got everything they need and want.

I used to use lard for the wild birds too, my gran still uses it for baking. I think in small doses it would be fine. It's pretty much what fat balls for wild birds are made from. Anyway, you only need it as a binder doesn't matter if they don't like the lard if you use a very small amount to hold the goodies together, they'll eat round it! lol
