DIY HUMANE way to Kill Slaughter Chicken (Stun-kill, Gas)

Another bunking of science!

ACV cures everything for you and your chickens.

Sorry thats not science, thats folklore.

Well, it has to lethal.
And it has to be quick.
I have discovered if you do more than one bird at a time (I usually do only 2 or 3) it doesn't seem like just me and the victim..
I am looking for a local slaughter/meat house to do my culls for me. It is getting to cold weather, and that complicates the process.
There sure are a lot of us thinking about this, though.

@ $4 a bird, local price. I can kill chickens just a humanely as any processor. I know I am much more concerned for my meaties last moments then an employee of a processor. Not that those people are bad, they are not. Its just that I am better and more of a vested interest in the final product.

Thread still going!

If you have so much of a problem killing a chicken, that you have to use $2000 captive bolts, argon/Co2 whatever to stun them, maybe you ought not be doing it in the first place.

It's more of a TIME thing with me than a money thing. If I can find a guy within an hours drive or so of here, I'll gladly take my culls there and save the time of setting up, butchering and cleaning up. I swear I can butcher a deer quicker than a chicken.

You're kidding, right??

How long does it take to carry a chicken to a cone, tree or fence and secure it upside down and slit the throat? Wait 30 seconds for the total bleed out, remove it from that place and lay it on a flat surface, skin and gut it? If it's a skinny layer breed, I don't even bother to gut it, just skin it and remove the breasts, thighs and legs and toss the rest to the dog.

15-20 min. tops and that is if I'm not trying to get done quickly. Driving an hour and then having to drive the same hour to pick it all up, plus paying for it, seems more than a little nonsensical.

Some people are more squeamish than others, and that is ok.

I think no matter how it is done (within reason) it is better than buying store-chickens, whose short life has no doubt been miserable. At least your chickens will have lived a decent life. I think if you aren't prepared to kill an animal yourself, then you shouldn't eat meat. This is a bit harder for those in an apartment in the city of course! But when people are forced to face the realities of where their food comes from it makes them think twice about how much we waste, and how we don't really need to eat as much animal protein as we currently do.

Currently I am a vegetarian because I don't have the space to raise my own animals, but I am looking forward to the day where I can get the farm I've always wanted and breed my own animals for eating. Then I will know what has gone into them, I will know that they led a good life, and I will know that they were killed as humanely as possible. I will be thankful for every mouthful, just as nature intended!

Our nearest shop would be about 60 Km or 37 mile round trip or for delivered take 120 km or about 74 miles round trip so we have learned to be fairly self sufficient, so as we have a fair few show poultry here nd our culls end up in the freezer the axe is quick and efficient way of despatching a chicken or rooster and the wife does a wonderful job of plucking them.

X 4000. I ask myself often why I still follow this thread. My answer is always the same. For entertainment. I'm amused at people that will buy and eat chicken that has been treated and killed the way commercial chickens are, and yet cannot stomach giving birds that lived a good life a good end to it.
