DIY HUMANE way to Kill Slaughter Chicken (Stun-kill, Gas)

I'd have to agree with this take. All this drama over how to, if they suffer, how will I feel about the dying, etc. is.....well.....its just over dramatizing a simple, quick act of dispatching a food animal.

If one is this squeamish, its best to pay for someone else to process your birds, as its certainly not worth all this mental anguish for a meal of chicken. If you are not cut out for killing, just don't do it! A lot of people out there feel the same way and that is why they prefer their meat under cellophane. No big deal.

Its not heartless to approach killing animals for food in a matter of fact way. It doesn't mean we are de-sensitized to death and dying, it just means we approach a dirty job with the maturity it takes to know that someone has to do it, if you want to eat meat.

It all comes down to~if it bothers you that much~don't do it!

If you still want to eat your chickens and you don't want to pay for someone to process~straighten your spine, grab your tools and go to work. The quickest way is the most humane way, whether it be slicing the throat, chopping off the head, shooting, wringing the neck....they all last a milisecond, the bird is dead and therefore, feels no pain. End of story.

question about the CO2 method...does the animal suffocate? or just go to sleep? dosent the CO2 method take the oxygen from the air and suffocate the bird? if so..i would not do that! ever have an asthma attack? i'd rather loose my head in one quick chop!.. i think...

BUT..if it just puts you to sleep w/out suffocating you i think its a good way to go! ..i think...

Red Hen, from what I've read, breathing CO2, in the correct proportion, will cause an animal to lose consciousness, like fainting or suddenly passing out. They continue to breathe, so it's not like an asthma attack, or having your airway blocked. They wouldn't know there's no oxygen in what they're breathing. I thought maybe a chunk of dry ice in a box, put in the bird, cover the box, wait a few minutes. Or a jar of peroxide in a box, put in the bird, drop some baking soda in the peroxide, cover the box. Why anybody sees this as a great danger is beyond me.

Shooting a bird in the head, as I think of it, on a stump or wood block, gun pointed down, and at point blank, also seems very quick, easy, and sure. It you had two nails in the stump to hold the head, I'd think it would be pretty straight forward. Again, why some people see this as a great danger, I don't know.

I have sliced myself, more than once, in the process of slicing that loose neck skin to cut the throats. And, they didn't die quickly that way, either. It took several minutes.

I'm not sure I have the coordination and hand strength to hold a bird and wield an ax at the same time.

There is no place near me to take birds for processing, nor could I afford to add that cost to the cost of raising my own birds.

I can't speak for anybody else, but I don't have a problem with killing them at all. I've killed several. I just want to do it as quickly as possible. That, I've encountered problems with, and I'm trying to correct that.

Why anybody seems to have a problem with that idea, I don't know.

Death is necessary .... suffering we can do our best to minimize....but death will come to all of us one way or another.
Animals have no concept of longevity, only reflexive ways to survive. I think the "emotion" we are giving these animals is probably that of fear. Fear is a bad feeling, suffering...we don't want them to be afraid before we kill them...then we feel guilty for making them trust us so we can do it....
Once someone gets past all of this crap in their heads, the rest comes easier.

Since I recently joined this post to come to terms with and find humane ways of killing the birds, I think I understand how people are feeling. Trying to become somewhat comfortable with processing. I'm good now...and I thank all of you for getting me there. I had no idea how many people were struggling with this and determined to do it anyway.

but I want to add that a "botched" kill is not pretty so just be done with it. Gassing / suffocating birds would have to be done pretty accurately it seems. I can see many ways to screw it up.

Have any of you handled any dry ice ??? I have at the Univercity that I worked at... I have seen a laboratory tech loose a finger by accidentally touching it. What would happen when a chicken happens to step on a slab of it and it's foot freezes instantly to the dry ice and it panicks? Using hydrogen peroxide and backing soda... the fizz of the chemical reaction alone will send the chicken into a panic. What then when it spills the chemicals all over ? Using a gun at point blank range... what hapens if one happens to gerk their hand just a little bit and they shoot themselves in their foot or a bystander.
When I was a kid , many years ago, real jerk of a neighbor hung some chickens by their legs from a tree branch and then proceeded to shoot them with his .22 at point blank range. One bullet wizzed by mearly a fraction of an inch from my head. I dropped like a rock ! This from a half mile away. BAD, BAD, BAD and MORE BAD ideas when attemted by unknowledgable people that think that they are.
I attended a seminar last week and at the conclusion one attendee asked why he presented his lecture at a grade school level. Well, he said, when you give a lecture or speech to the general public, one has to do so at the fourth grade level or most just will not understand what you are talking about.
