Krazykhick, "Rodents probably get in but the coop is up off the ground. Now if I could keep the wild birds from eating the feed and chillin in the run, lol." To help with this problem look at U-Tube on "TREADLE FEEDER"

That is so cool! Can old birds learn new tricks? LOL...think my triny silkies are big enough to get it to open?

If that's the case, a silver reflective paint (while maybe not the most eye appealing) would fix the overheat issues as well as the algae issue. Or just build a "box" around the thing to keep the sun out of it, but a black barrel will get your water super hot if there's allot of sun exposure.

Hey DadofFour-I love the reclective paint idea or maybe a white cover for the tank.....I am still going to build a cedar box over the whole thing just because it matches the rest of the coop and run but I am for sure going to check in to some type of paint and/or cover for the barrel. Thanks for the idea...

The bottom of the chain is attached to an "S" type carabiner. I just lift the funnel and pull the water off of the caribiner. The bungee pops right off. Takes about 10 seconds to pull it down and probably 20 to put it back on and reattach the bungie. I'm so happy to not be changing out water two times/day anymore!

For the feed, I just lift up the funnel and pour more feed into the top without unattaching anything. It would take the same amount of time to unattach and remove it as the water.

You can always add more weight to the Treadle platform so lightweight chickies can open it and to train the older chickens to use it just leave it open a couple of days to get them used to steping on the treadle then close it 1/2 way. Soon they will figure it out, once they know theres food in it. You won't be having any more problems with wild birds or rodents. Hope this helps you.
