Well now - here's another problem: lol I fixed the expansion nut and it worked fine, but still taking the lid off and on to fill. Obviously, these lids are not made to last very long and there is a crack or 2 in it, which has broken the seal when it is on. The water flows and flows because it's not airtight. So I fill it up, and it runs out the hole at the bottom until the water level is even w/ the hole...

So . . . back to Square One! I'm going to find a laundry or restaurant or somewhere that has big plastic containers and ask for one . . . but it will have to have a screw on lid at the top!! Gotta go to a bigger town though, so for now, back to filling the water almost every day. Any suggestions or do you all think this cannot be fixed except to replace? (Short on $$.)
I found a lid for a 5 gallon bucket at Menard's that has a screw on section. The rim stays put, but the inner part of the lids screw on and off. Perfect! Also, I have seen one made using a pvc screw on end cap in the lid. You have to cut the hole in the lid and caulk the thing, but the idea seems like a good one. There are two pvc pieces required, the screw on end & the part it screws into. You mount the part it screws into in the hole in the lid you make, which must be just the right size.

I'm not sure how many people have seen one of these. I used them when I was a kid. I think my dad showed me how to make them. It is a chicken catcher made from a coat hanger. First straighten the coat hanger and cut the part off of one end that was twisted when it was tied together then bend that end back 180 degrees with the bend diameter about the size of a chicken's leg. Then bend the wire outward to make to wider so that it will slip over the chickens lower leg just above it's foot. Next bend the other end , usually the end with the hook on it so that you have something other than the straight wire for a grip.

Just slip up behind them and slip the wire around one leg and hold it until you can grip the legs. This gives you quite a bit more reach when trying to catch a chicken for what ever purpose. It lets you catch a chicken with less excitement for it or other chickens. If I can master the attachment I have a picture. It's nothing fancy but it is really usefull when you need to catch a chicken. I don't seem to have an option for attaching a picture.

Coat hanger hook

commercial hook

You can also take the coat hanger hook and duct tape it to a wooden rod for stiffness.

Personally I would be afraid of doing damage to legs. You can buy a net at Walmart for about twelve bucks. The kind for scooping fish out of the water after you have reeled them in. The net is big enough the handle telescopes out to about four feet..... I walk with a walker most times running after a chicken isn't possible. I set up spots to corner em then can use the net.

"Thanks for posting.
Good idea I think personally!
I think it will work excellent.
It will not spook the flock like a large invading fish net.
It will also not knock the bird unconscious when you try and scoop one up.
You will have one foot hooked before they know what is going on.
The foot is the toughest part of a chicken.
It is not like you are hooking them around the neck.
It will just impede the birds motion long enough for you to grab it in my opinion.
As long as you do not make the handle more than 4 feet long.
I going to build one tomorrow!"
I will try it out and give you a testimonial.

I'm sorry I took a picture but I don't see anything for attachments. I have attached pictures before on this thread. I have looked again this morning and I don't know why I don't have a button for attachments. Things like this are much easier explained and understood with illustrations. I write technical manuals in my job.
