I hang my waterers up, however they are the metal ones so you can't see through them to. I was thinking of putting a spring of some sort in the middle/top of the chain they hang from to be able to gauge how much water is left. So when it is full the spring is extended and when it is tight it is almost empty. Has anyone tried this?

Well, my DIY brooder is nearly done just in time for our first expected hatch date.

I made everything except the bedding and waterer from recovered materials, oh I bought the hinges, some timber and a ceramic globe.

Should fit a few chicks in there until they are big enough to brave the mobile coops I already finished.

Still waiting on a delivery so I can finish my DIY incubator, might have to write some pages for the Learning Forum soon, I am gathering a few pieces now

nice job,
you might want to rethink what appears to be cedar bedding,,,,many folks have respiratory problems when chicks are placed on it,,,,,hardwood shavings, clean yellow straw are my choices

I have heard mixed reviews with cedar shavings... so some if its the aromatic type then they cause issues I have cedar in both coops mixed with pine keeps the bugs away

Hi folks, the bedding is Red Gum, a local tree.

I use straw in my nesting boxes, but was a bit worried it was too slippery, I asked the breeder for pine and this is the stuff she uses. It was used in all her brooders and she assures me it was safe for the chicks.

The brooder body itself is two old dresser draws, reversed and stacked on top. The panel floor was removed from the top draw and turned into the lid. I wanted a wire lid so I had to brace the lid with a cheap frame. The timber was from Bunnings, about $1.11 a length (1.2m) Legs were salvaged timber, feeder was left over MDF from another job, lamp was a desk lamp from K Mart (clamp on type with flexible neck) for $10.

Got the bedding, drinker and ceramic globe from the breeder that we got our eggs from for this hatch.

Not the most gorgeous thing, but given the price it functions.
