I use straw in my nesting boxes, but was a bit worried it was too slippery, I asked the breeder for pine and this is the stuff she uses. It was used in all her brooders and she assures me it was safe for the chicks.
The brooder body itself is two old dresser draws, reversed and stacked on top. The panel floor was removed from the top draw and turned into the lid. I wanted a wire lid so I had to brace the lid with a cheap frame. The timber was from Bunnings, about $1.11 a length (1.2m) Legs were salvaged timber, feeder was left over MDF from another job, lamp was a desk lamp from K Mart (clamp on type with flexible neck) for $10.
Got the bedding, drinker and ceramic globe from the breeder that we got our eggs from for this hatch.
Not the most gorgeous thing, but given the price it functions.
