If you cant get a cork to work a simple method to cork it would be to use a screw just a little larger than the hole. for the first application put some pressure on it while screwing it into the hole. Believe it or not you will be forming self sealing threads in the process. It may leak a little but not enough to be concerned till you get it to its destination.

Oh Oh I had a thought. while typing this.... If you find the screw thats the right size you then form the threads for a seal.... Then take the screw out and have someone grind off half the threads Leave about a quarter inch of threads in tact close to the head of the screw. NOW you never have to remove the screw. Screw it in to seal and transport. When you have the waterer in position back the screw out only far enough till the flat portion breaks the seal.

Gawd now I have to draw it up.... Give me about half hour.

OK here is the idea I had...


Pm me and I can send a Jpeg. But the removal of screw threads should make water flow easily out into the pan.

Also if it leaks too badly you can slip an O ring onto the screw before assembly. then when you snug it up to seal it off the O ring will keep the seal. They are pretty inexpensive.... but if you cant find some just some rubber innertube with a hole punched in it will work as long as it lays flat.

I think you had a great idea perchie girl but, I think little bits is having more trouble with the taking the lid on and off for filling. Hence why many posters have used laundry soap and dish detergent buckets with lided openings that seal at the top. Your idea of a screw may still apply it will just be hard to find a bolt/screw large enough for their needs.

I may have just read things wrong but that is how interpreted it.

Scoop-zilla. I needed a quicker alternative to sifting sand in the brooder. It's the top off a 5 gallon jug. I used garden screen from the dollar store ,it's twice as large as window screen. and just used zip ties to fasten it all together. much quicker than a kitty litter scoop

Update. I was having trouble moving around in the brooder within the cardboard barrier i constructed so yesterday i took down the wall. now they have 3 times the space and i was able to scoop the even now larger brooder in half the time as before, also they are two weeks old and actually are starting to way more solid droppings much easier than the wet icky baby poo

i think the next batch of chicks i will use a little less sand I'm finding i have to dig down to the floor and not just scrape the surface, I'm thinking maybe 1.5 inches would be lots of sand and allot less sifting.

I dont like gravity waterers like this.... They are cumbersome heavy and messy. My place is up in the High desert of San Diego county. Today its over a hundred degrees up there. I considered using nipple waterers but in that heat they need to be able to dip thier wattles into the water when they drink to help them cool off.... I use dog bowl style waterers hooked up to a good stout hose.

Believe it or not the hoses last a good five years if they are continuously pressurized and not punctured by something.

I love it.... This would be good for the cat box as well. I use a childrens play pool the kind with hard sides filled with about eighty pounds of kitty litter. Three cats need NO excuse for not using the litter box. (Cat box is out in an enclosed greenhouse room.)

Its all i could find. i think pvc would be better but just a matter of finding one. here's an option
