If you cant get a cork to work a simple method to cork it would be to use a screw just a little larger than the hole. for the first application put some pressure on it while screwing it into the hole. Believe it or not you will be forming self sealing threads in the process. It may leak a little but not enough to be concerned till you get it to its destination.
Oh Oh I had a thought. while typing this.... If you find the screw thats the right size you then form the threads for a seal.... Then take the screw out and have someone grind off half the threads Leave about a quarter inch of threads in tact close to the head of the screw. NOW you never have to remove the screw. Screw it in to seal and transport. When you have the waterer in position back the screw out only far enough till the flat portion breaks the seal.
Gawd now I have to draw it up.... Give me about half hour.
