I have 50 nipples i bought on ebay. I am hoping to get something built while I am in the Philippines for the 3 1/2 days that bernie can use as a prototype.

I am going to use pipe feeders as well. Our chicken population is going to explode by Christmas

Take note in the required thread size. I had to hunt about my tool box for a healthy 9mm drill bit, 8.5 was too tight, 9.5mm leaked.

Not sure on the imperial size if that's what you prefer to work with.

Oh gosh, they're not endangered here...lol.  We have hundreds...thousands even.  But our country area is very dark...not even street lights.  When they're at their peak, our fields literally sparkle.

I grew up in Downtown Philly, and we used to even get them there... not any more, though. I did some research, and while people aren't sure, the most scientifically supported theory is light pollution is killing them off. They use light to communicate, so the more light we create, the harder it is for them to find each other and mate. I think they're actually "endangered". Very sad

Help the fireflies! Turn off your lights at night!

Michigan has been inundated with bugs that make their butt glow (good international title) so if you've never seen come on over.

Perhaps they're not dying off but just moved to Michigan.

I grew up in Mississippi...we called them "lightning bugs."

WE do too in Missouri but know what it is if someone does say firefly Is Fire Fly the actual name? .
Funny we DO call them "lightening" bugs but they don't look like lightening ...maybe started as light-ing bugs? Look like little Tinkerbelle fairies blinking all over fields.
Havent seen many the last 2 years but also haven't seen hardly ANY crickets or grasshoppers! Odd. Well it was 100- 105 and dry a lot last summer and this year rain rain rain .

We have LOTS and LOTS of "Lightening Bugs" or "Fire-Flies" here in KY. I thought they were everywhere! Once when I was 10 y/o, I caught a whole jar of them (I mean maybe a 100 in a quart canning jar!) and was going to use it as a night-light in my room. But I made the holes too big in the top (I didn't want them to die!) and they all got out! My mom was not happy!

Do chickens eat them?

Aside some kid I knew in school told me he put ants in ice cubes to see if they would come back alive Wonder if he told his MOm about the ants before she used them for tea or soda ? LOL .

. In 1970 some adults were coming to my mothers house they had rented on some land and asked for the kids to help to collect lightening bugs for some science experiment. They paid the kids a penny each . ,.

LOL.... That looks like Macrame..... But you say chain? as in chrochet? .... awesome. something like this also could be made from wire.

Where are you?

We're in the fingerlakes region of upstate NY. Our area is mostly farmland, lots of wide open fields and shrubby grasses. I've noticed that the fireflies tend to be most prevalent in the tall grass areas that border the perimeter of our property. But certainly, they are all over the fields, too.

It's kind of funny because there are SO many of them and then all of a sudden, poof, they're gone!

Last summer, my kids and I kept track and reported bug counts with Boston Museum of Science. They're doing some kind of firefly tracking program because, overall, firefly populations are diminishing.

We had an amazing Fire Fly season this year. They were so plentiful for a couple of weeks that you had to be careful where you stepped during the night. We do see them every year, but this year was a banner year for them here. It's one of the best times of year when they light up the ground, forests and fields. Pictures can never do them justice.
