On flipping the dog bowl...wonder if I could take the heater out like I did, cover with the tin and replace it in the dog bowl upside down. Then it would be protected and have the base raised up, etc.

Maybe I'll grab one of those and see how that works. I'll report back

For those who are concerned about plastics..... Look for the number 5 on the container..... If its 5 pass it up.

HDPE is an excellent product used in food grade processes.... it does not out gas "pass on its chemicals" Its pretty UV tolerant... doesnt last for ever in the sun but a very long time. It is in those Food grade Drums that are used to transport Syrups and such.

BTW Plastic in general is woven completely throughout our society..... Look at Carpet, Computers, Cars.... Uh O I hear an alliteration coming on.... Cameras, Cell phones, Cartons..... am I on a roll here? Combs, Cups..... Oh make me stop..... OK Cell phones dont work because its not a hard C....

I need more Coffee..... oh gawd.

Now you know why I don't want to add more!

(It's the xenoextrogens that cause a lot of havoc with the endocrine system...)

I'm more concerned about EATING FROM THEM (stored foods) and breathing fumes (from factory manufacturing, heating, carpet, vinyl siding, etc.) Not to mention the additional estrogens in legumes (which I also avoid for that and other reasons) and some other foods that are fads in our current American diets (like flax..

and others).

So...at least my chickens can be as plastic-free in their eating and drinking situation as I can make it!

Okay. What about the door opener? It has to turn on and off 2x/day. And the clock on the timer has to run 24 hours/day.

And if it's drawing from the solar panel, does that count for anything?

I see some issues.... Not un solvable.... The "cup" the upside down bowl rim makes. That can be filled with sand or something similar to keep junk from accumulating. Of course the rim will need to have drainage holes.

Door openers and clocks need tiny amounts of power compared to anything generating heat.

It would only be "drawing from a solar panel" during daylight, and even then will only get maximum output a few hours per day in full Sun

You have to replace all the amps you use, PLUS some you lose due to inefficiency in the system, so to recharge a 100 Amp Hour battery would take over 10 hours at 10 Amps per Hour.

Most AC powered chargers would take longer than that, and you'd have to spend a fortune on solar panels to get that much output, and then it would STILL only operate a couple of hours per night on just one large battery, which will likely cost over $100
