Hot sauce or pepper will work they even sell a wire with pepper infused insulation. They use it in the US for rats.

do they sell Spark plug wire or ignition wire? How about battery cables? or antenna wire?

Rats will chew on everything and have been known to work their way through red brick. Even if the Hot sauce was effective which I dont doubt it only takes one bite to break the insulation and begin corrosion.

Best solution in my mind is exclusion and removing hiding places where possible as well as removing access to feed. Especially in areas close to house and vehicle. I will use poison if I have to but I prefer not. There are too many up the predator chain that depend on rodents for a living.

Very true they eat through any thing. Let me be more specific. The the phone co. uses it in certain areas to deter rats.

I like to use cats on the outside and JustOneBite on the inside.
just one bite is great stuff.... It has Warfarin in it and even if the mouse or rat goes somewhere else to die there isnt enough remaining to be an issue.... Unless they found the Mouse or Rat graveyard and there was a couple of hundred in there....

Cats don't last more than thirty minutes outside here. I can attest to that. I was stacking some pipe in the "repurposing pile" just outside my horse corral once. About ten in the morning. I had one surviving hen left out of a flock that was taken by bobcats the previous month. She was in the 100 x 100 horse corral happily scratching in the Poo.... Good stuff horse poo. I looked up and here comes a coyote through the corral..... I hollered at him and he froze for a moment.... they headed strait for my hen. He grabbed her and I threw something.... He dropped her looked at me again and grabbed her and continued on for his breakfast.

Of course I could build a dog and cat proof chainlink fence to keep em in and park the truck inside that.... Which may be an option later on. It would mean fencing in about five acres though. I need to measure it off to be certain..... But thehorse corral is 100 by 100 the back yard is about the same size and the front yard too. then the driveway would Double all that

I cant have any animals up there that dont eat Hay while I cant live there. I tried it with chickens and it was a marginal success but everything had to work perfectly.... Sigh Life aint perfect for sure.

That is hard. Some folks who leave LGDs out on range with flocks where there are no houses near leave a big dog food dispenser for them to eat from and just leave them to it. That would sure take some trust in how long the dog food would last, if the watering system would work well and not fowl up, and if the dogs would stay put with the flocks at all times.

But it sure would be nice to have some dogs to combat your predators.

Quote: I wish I could get the phone company to sell me some..... Or any of their "roebust" phone wire. I havent been able to find it online even.... You know the stuff that they use to run phone lines from pole to pole.... not the eensy stuff that has to be run in conduit for house hold. My phones havent worked in probably seven years now. The wire is buried in PVC and it runs 1000 feet from the junction box near the well. What I want to do is run some field fencing from the well up to the house and string the wire on that. OR even run it in conduit fastened to the fence. So I can work on the dang stuff when it stops working.

I called the phone company to come see if they could repair the line.... LOL.... I whined about not being able to "fix it myself much like I did here..... the phone guy wasnt allowed to sell me some but he paused and grinned and walked to the back of his truck Grabbed up a huge roll in a box of the stuff and dropped it in the middle of the road. "Ooops it must have bounced off the truck.... Those back roads are sometimes pretty Gnarly....." Then he drove off....

Hes a what a guy in my book. It was enough to repair the line from the house to the other side of the driveway.... Pulling though existing conduit was the next task....

deb "sorry for the soap box.... I really do appreciate the suggestions"
