They do just jump in. I put a flag stone on the bottom under hay to weigh it down. My fat CX try sometimes and tip them. I have these in random places for a few girls who refuse to lay in coops. The ones in the actual coop I lay on sides. They like that to. Silly chickens.
So they actually jump up into the crate? I was going to use those in my new coop but sit them on the side so they could just walk in. I'm not sure which way to put them now. :)

Very cool little roost. Down here in Texas there may be a problem finding hockey tape.......Made me laugh!

Thanks! It's not the most sturdy; I was prepared to cut up another coat hanger for bracing, but after taping (i only used hockey tape because i have an abundance of it) to keep the stick from spinning, my infirm houdan hen no longer had an issue using it. A 10# rooster might, though :p

Quote: If you just wire 3 or 4 of them together side-by-side they won't tip over unless you get 4 big bottom girls on it at once.

Our 2 week old babies were getting to big for there original brooder so I remembered seeing something on here before so we did a modified version since ours are in a four seasons type room. We laid down a tarp and then used wire storage racks around it put boxes up to stop them from kicking the bedding out and so they couldn't get hurt in the racks added a few rocks rom outside to make sure that the boxes and racks wouldn't be moved. We had everything just laying around except the tarp so it only cost us the few dollars for the tarp. They are so happy to have this space. we didn't mice the old stick since there heater hanger now serves the same purpose.

Excellent ideas.... last time I tried to brood in the house I had em on a plastic card table and the floor Still looked like yours.... Only mine was much much much messier....

Now that I no longer have cats I am going to do this out in my green house room... It is open to the outside with only a chainlink separator to keep large critters out..... Hmmm I have water out there and power too.... Gawd .... thank you for giving me a "danger Will Robinson" idea...

Here are some better pictures sorry it is a winter green house/garden so it is a small room to get far enough back to see it all. I hope this is a better help for you!
