Quote: Hmm, I don't remember how vinyl behaves in low temperatures, but otherwise that would work. It needs to be resistant to a bit of acid, and not become brittle or lose flexibility in -20C.

Good point. shade cloth is VERY porous allows water to go right through and its made of PVC if i am remembering. The poop boards under the roosts are for catching the poo from when they sleep. in those temps you will get poopsicles over night....LOL. Probably wont even stay liquid long enough to worry. Ammonia doesnt start till its outisde of the chicken.... for a while.

Does anyone have a fancy dropping board holder?

I want to put dropping boards in my small coop, and I need an easy way that I can access them to clean them. Because the door is kind of small (30x30 is not that small, but I'm a big guy) I am looking for a design that I can get the boards out for a cleaning and back in ASAP. This will be especially important in the cold weather.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions. Pictures GREATLY appreciated.

I'll have to look for pictures but in the coop design thread there were several folks who put in what amounts to a very shallow drawer that they could pull out from the outside, scrape or hose off and slide the drawer back in.

For What its worth DIY projects often are best done by actually Tinkering.... Taking stuff in hand and Messin with it. MANY new inventions are created out of found objects and Many Tweaks... Linkages for example... Very complicated to define with Mathematics and drafting software... The best way is to cobble up some spare parts and just do them. The best example is the ones involved with Treadle feeders..... Or Chicken pop doors..... You dont know what will work till you give them a try.

Me I cant help explain without doing a sketch.... My words fail me... because I use too many.

The saying "a picture is worth a thousand words" comes to mind.

Well, it's got some big chips in it now. If you go to ebay and search for chamber pots, a bunch certainly come up, but beware they are not miniatures. The chipped pots are cheap.

Anyone modified the chick feeders that screw onto canning jars to not waste so much feed? I find that they fill too high and the chicks push a lot out of the holes, seems like more than they actually eat. I think the manufacturers of those feeders are in cahoots with the feed companies!

I did see where someone else here on BYC put a small circular piece of the smaller chicken wire inside the lid so it restricted the opening just a tad bit more, enough to help stop the excess waste. I'll see if I can find it again....
