DIY Thread - Let's see your "Inventions".

This is my mini coop. I made it today! It is made of crates and scrap wood! It will be holding 2 hens. Its got a sliding top to get eggs out of.

That is cute! Are you going to be painting it? I can just invision this as being painted up in some cute manner and little snug as a bug in a backyard! Congratulations!!!

Not as much as you'd think - that lip is pretty deep (and if I weren't working with the scraps of what I had, would have been deeper). The chickens have to reach down into the lip to eat and that cuts down on the "toss the food out" stuff that otherwise happens so often.

I like it! Any problems with them wasting?

Honestly this is an indoor setup for me, and here is why - the bag collar goes around the outside of the bag, so rain off the bag would be funneled into the feed or along the ramp. I could add roofs or shelters or stuff like that but this is for my feeder in the greenhouse, so not a big deal that it isn't sheltered.

That is brilliant! I have one question. Does the bag hold up to rain issues? I see you are in Washington, so I know you get plenty of rain. Is this an indoor only feeder? Or have you tried it outside?

I have loved viewing this thread! Such great inventiveness on this forum!

I have something I tried but I wouldn't really call it an invention. I just took using totes for nest boxes one step further and bought the kind with the lid that locks on with the use of the handles. Then I cut out the bottoms, inverted them and used them for slide doors in the back for outside access. I found the plastic was a good thickness for running in the grooves of the scrap tongue in groove flooring I had been using for kindling this year.

This allows for easy outside access. I also find that these kinds of nest boxes will come in handy if needing to move a broody and her clutch....I can just remove the whole tote and replace it with another and she need never be disturbed. I insulated both nest boxes and the slide doors with heavy duty cardboard...I'll have to see how that holds up to hen pecking and messes.
