Yesterday we noticed our 4 month old chicken’s one eye was closed and he kept turning his head to that side. As the day progressed he started acting dizzy and turning circles and disoriented. Today he had been doing the same, can’t seem to keep his other eye open, acting very dopey and can’t stand straight. This afternoon we gave him electrolytes and probiotics in his water, had to feed him by Syringe, could only get him to take about 5cc. It’s hard to open his mouth.

Any idea what we can do for him, or what this could be?? I feel so bad and want to make him better.

Check in his ears. Gently push the ear flap forward and shine a strong light in the ears. If you see any waxy gunk, he likely has an ear infection.

Is there any bubbling in his eyes? Have you pried open the closed eye to check out what it looks like? If the eye has a slight pink glaze, he has an eye infection.

If you see that his ears and the eye are infected, you will need to get him on an antibiotic. You should be able to find Tylan 50 at a feed store. It's injectable, but you may give it orally at .5 ml twice a day for five days.

If you find no sign of bacterial infection, then he may have a temporary vitamin E deficiency. It can affect balance and cause neck contortions as well as bizarre body movement. Use vitamin E oil 400iu once a day until the symptoms disappear.

What did it end up being ? I have a rooster acting like this right now he's only 3 months old. Crop empty. Yesterday he ate a bit, but mostly just sat quietly and droopy. I can syringe him some water he has been allowing this but mushy food is another story! Can't get it in the beak!
