dlhunicorn please help! Sick chick has developed large cyst on breast

Well guess what? I found an old-ish bottle in our boat's offshore medical kit. It is from 2004, and I was going to throw out all these old meds because they are expired. If you want some I would be happy to send it to you.

It's in pill form, for humans, each tablet is 20 mg. Let me know if it would be of use.

just in case you cant find a vet to help you (unless you know an asthma patient) then start easing it off her now because they must be eased off it very gradually or it (the symptoms) will come back and hit them twice as bad.... ofthen the prednisone (at increasingly smaller dosage and fewer doses further between each other) must be contd for up to 6-7 weeks ....stupid vet should know you cant "just" discontinue it from one day to the next!

I'd call another vet. You have to remember that a lot of vets still look at chickens as expendable egg producers or potential chicken nuggets, not as pets that we can actually care about and get fond of. Sometimes you have to be insistent that you want action!
Good luck!

Yep! Stupid vets! I called our family vet. The one I have been using for years hoping that they would just prescribe me some for moonlight but NOWAY! His statement was I dont deal with chickens and cant give you a prescription. So I called a bird vet I know about and asked them to do the same. Just prescribe me the prednisone without having to bring moonlight in since I know what her problem is. There statement there from the vet tech was we dont do that here. You must bring your biord in to be seen. My response back was "you'd rather my little animal suffer and die than to heal her" the vet tech was very snappy and said "you can look at it any way you'd like but if you want the med's you must bring her in." AHHHHH!!!!! Totally ticks me off. So anyways I searched my medicine cabinet and found that I had some left over from my girls. They are both Asthmatics. Now Im running low. I have about 1 weeks worth left. I actually "purchased" if thats what you want to call it online and put in some bogus vet info hoping the online pet pharmacy wouldnt call the bogus vet I created and just send the med out to me. BUT...it didnt work. They are dotting the i's and crossing their t's. I put my cell phone number down as the vet office number and they have called and left a message. Looks like Im running out of luck.

So I will start to slowly take her off the med today. I will decrease the 1.5 mg Im already giving her in half. Hopefully she will continue to improve.

Anyone have any other ideas?

newchickmommy..it may be something called a full crop. Is the cyst on the right breast? If so this is most likely what it is and its nothing to be worried about. I just found out what a full crop was last night. Im new to the chicken family as well. A full crop is where a chicken stores food. Like a hamster stores food in their cheeks well chickens do this too. Its part of their digestive system. I took my chicks food away for the evening and only provided water. The cyst was almost gone this morning but now completely gone. I posted a message on the board last night asking our friends here to explain what a full crop was. I received some very imformational feedback. Just look for my posted message from last night. Hopefully this will help.
