Is it just a given? Are they going to get worms? How do I know if they have them and is it routine to treat them every so often as a precaution?

Also, someone said to me that if you step on the poop and there are worms in it that the worms will go in your foot and you'll get worms. Is this true? My kids can't seem to keep their darn shoes on outside, now I'm getting paranoid!

Some people recommend routine worming, others say only if there is evidence: visible worms or a positive culture. It seems to be a discretionary thing. There are some worms that can tunnel into the skin. I don't think chickens carry them, though. Parasites don't commonly attack birds and mammals.
