I inherited several buff cochin bantams when I bought this farm. They all seemed to prefer nesting on the floor than in nest boxes, and it took me a while to get them using roots as well. I finally taught them how to be free range without getting killed, by adding other birds to the flock.
I still have (or should I say HAD) three of these original cochins left. Since the skunk invaded the henhouse, the cochins are reluctant to go in at night. Night before last I got two of them to go in. The third stayed out all night and was too dumb to get up high in a tree and not get killed. She is gone. Last night, same thing. I only have one cochin left. Why don't they know enough to get up in a tree or someplace a preditor can't get them?
These three hens also went broody together, all at once! All three sat on a communal nest, huddled together, practically on top of each other for weeks! When they hatched out eggs that were not their own, they killed the chicks! Is this common of cochins? If so, I'm glad I'm down to only one. I'm just wondering if the previous owner may have conditioned these birds to behave in this strange way, by the way they were housed or something. Do all cochins act like this?
